DAWGS Sweep Lady Mustangs Out of DAWG House

The Magnolia High School Lady Bulldogs ripped into the District 18-4A rival Magnolia West Lady Mustangs tonight sweeping the 'Stangs for the second time this season and keeping on track for a District showdown with co-leader Brenham this Wednesday evening. The DAWGS were definitely NOT looking ahead in tonight's match as evidenced by the scores (25-14, 25-14, and 25-12) and broke the (10-16, 2-5) Mustangs in less than an hour, and kept the noisy DAWG POUND on their feet shaking their keys shouting, "Start the bus, start the bus...."

The keys were jing-a-linging in the DAWG House.

The Lady Bulldogs played consistent, aggressive, and smart volleyball against their younger, less experienced opponent with an multi-pronged attack led by sophomore MB Courtney Felinski's 14 kills, 2 aces, 5 digs and 3 block assists; senior OH Kelli Stewart's 12 kills, 2 aces, 6 digs and 2 block assists; sophomore OH Katzy Randall who blasted 7 kills with 10 digs; senior MB Meagan Little who's timely 6 kills, 3 aces, 4 digs and 1 block assist kept the DAWGS fired up and hungry; sophomore setter Paige Holland who had a kill, 4 digs, 2 assist blocks and 39 assists; not to mention another fine performance from junior Angi Gould (2 aces and 5 digs), senior OH Sarah Bacho (1 kill) and senior Hannah Davies' 8 digs.

The Lady Mustangs opened the match blocking Meagan Little at 0-1 and paid for that dearly, from then on. Meagan quickly dinked the ball for a point on the very next play to tie it at 1-1, then served up an ace at 3-1, followed by Kelli Stewart hammering a kill at 4-1 and a dink at 5-1, then after a few errors - Courtney Felinski jammed the Stangs with kills in the middle at 9-3 and 10-4. The DAWGS kept at least a 6 point margin when they went on a tear and found themselves leading by 9 at 20-11 when the Lady Mustangs called time out and tried to catch their breath. The ladies then earned the final 5 DAWGIE points with a Felinski dink at 21-11, a Stewart dink at 22-12, another Felinski kill at 23-13, then a Meagan Little kill in the middle at 24-13, and a Katzy Randall finale blast at 25-14 to make this a solid victory and to make any coach sit up and take notice that this is becoming a well rounded team and will be difficult to stop when they're hitting in all cylinders like they are! The dinks were well placed and timely and kept the Lady Mustangs confused and complimented the kill shots that came behind them.

In the second set, the teams switched sides - but the DAWGS gave another dose of DAWG Power, pouncing on their rival for 10 earned points and sitting pretty with an 11 point lead at 14-3 thanks to a handful of MWHS's errors. The Lady Bulldogs pressed on with another solid team attack and found they kept their 11 point advantage at 23-12 when the high-flyin' Kelli Stewart slammed another one by 'em. Both teams sleepwalked to the finish with the same result - DAWGS 25 MUSTANGS 14. The barking in the Pound started up.......

Again the Lady Bulldogs went to work in this third set, earning their points the hard way: Kelli with a shot at 2-0 then teaming up with Courtney for a block assist at 3-0, then Courtney hammering her way for the next 3 DAWG (earned) points at 5-2, her Glide shot at 6-3, a dink at 7-4; and once the Mustangs started to gang up on Courtney, Katzy Randall launched a SCUD at 9-4 and all-of-a-sudden, the Lady Mustangs had a hard time keeping things together. The DAWGS kept pushing forward and again felt comfortable with their 10 point lead at 20-10, with more fireworks out of Kelli: 14-8, 15-8, 19-8 and Courtney: 18-8 and 20-10. Instead of going quietly, the DAWGS chomped down hard and scored 5 to MWHS's 2 points as Sarah Bacho hammered one down the line at 21-11, Kelli had another ace at 22-11, and Katzy scalded another one at 23-12 and the Stangs bowed before their opponents in homage and scampered off...25-12.

Not only did the Lady Bulldog Varsity (21-12, 7-0) defeat Magnolia West in 3 straight, but the JV defeated West (25-16, 25-14) and the 9th grade (10-9, 5-0) defeated West 26-24, 21-25, 25-22.

DAWGS Sweep Wildkats in Record Time

The Lady Bulldogs continued on in this final set by outplaying their opponent in all facets of their play. Again, they pounced on the Kats early and commanded a big lead at 14-3 behind a Meagan Little ace serve at 2-1, and several Kelli 'Bam Bam' Stewart WMD kills at 5-1, 9-3 (which forced Willis to take a timeout), and at 12-3; as well as a great backrow kill from Katzy Randall at 10-3; and a well placed ace serve from Paige Holland at 13-3; coupled with 8 Wildkat errors and no earned points of their own.

The DAWGS were led by OH senior Kelli Stewart who had 13 kills, 3 assist blocks, 3 aces and 4 digs; followed by OH Katzy Randall's 7 kills, 1 solo block, 1 ace and 6 digs; Courtney Felinski's 6 kills and 3 block assists; senior MB Meagan Little's 5 kills (she would've had 7 kills but twice the Kats were in the net), 1 block assist and 1 ace; sophomore setter Paige Holland who had 1 kill, 2 aces, along with her 31 assists, and a solid performance from Libero Hannah Davies who had 13 digs.

The DAWGS finished off the hometown Willis Wildkats in less than 45 minutes while never being threatened, yet still playing consistently and not "falling into the trap of playing to the level of your opponent." The Lady Bulldogs ran away with the three sets 25-8, 25-16, and 25-11 and still had time to eat an early dinner and enjoy the cool Texas' evening!

DAWGS Overcome 'Kats in Set 2

After pummeling the Wildkats in the first set, the Lady Bulldogs were not about to buck the trend of coming out in the second set and falling flat on the floor and allowing their opponent to get back into the game.....or were they? The DAWGS dropped their first two opportunities of the second set with 2 errors and that uneasy feeling was starting to come over the DAWG POUND (fans) before Kelli Stewart relieved their anxieties with a blast off the Kats' paws and team mate Courtney Felinski followed with her "Glide" kill shot, which was surgically placed between the Wildkat defenders to tie the set at 2-2.

The show of force was not enough to deter the Kats who stepped up their game a bit while the DAWGS sputtered briefly tying the Wildkats at least 3 more times over the next 8 possesions. Once Katzy Randall sent a shot down the line to make the score 8 to 7, the rattled Lady Wildkats began to implode with a series of hitting and serving errors, as the Lady Bulldogs added 4 earned points (2 kills from Megan Little, 1 Paige Holland kill and 1 Courtney Felinski kill) along with the Kats' gifts and went on a 12 to 6 run to make the score 20-13 when this audio file begins:

It may not have been the prettiest win the DAWGS have ever earned, but it doesn't always have to be. The Lady Bulldogs pulled it together, by regrouped, played harder and basically made fewer errors than the Wildkats. In many cases, that in itself is enough for a team to win.

DAWGS OverPower Host Wildkats

The Lady Bulldogs didn't mean to be rude or impolite to their hosts in their District 18-4A volleyball match as they faced the Lady Wildkats in the Willis High School gymnasium, but business is business and the DAWGS were ready to establish a co-leader's position in the district race with Brenham and to frankly, get after it tonight in the teams' first meeting of the season.

The DAWGS wasted no time as senior MB Meagan Little opened the scoring with a hammer kill shot to middle of the court and at 1-0 and instantly sound the alarm for the Wildkats. The Lady Wildkats had trouble handling the ball from that point forward and the DAWGS were not going to be in a charitable mood this evening as they hammered their way forward powering 6 kill points (Meagan at 1-0, Courtney Felinski at 4-1 and at 8-1, Kelli Stewart at 6-1, and teaming up with Courtney for an assist block point at 7-1then another rocket at 9-1) forcing a time out by the Willis Wildkats who were not helping their cause either with 3 errors.

The time out did not seem to phase the DAWGS who came out and scored 4 more straight points (Kelli 'Bam-Bam-Jam' at 10-1 and a block at 13-1; with a Paige Holland ace serve sandwiched in at 12-1 and another error by Willis) before giving a few more back before scoring more to offset the margin and making the score 21-5 before leading into this audio file:

The 8th Grade Lady Bears hosted Mance Park Jr. High last night. Both teams did an awesome job defeating our opponents.

The "B" team took Mance Park in two games, 25-12 and 25-12. They were lead by Lakisha Hubbard with 15 points, Kacy Hoskins with 8 points, Makinzee Lillico with 3 kills.

The "A" team took Mance Park in 2 games as well; 25-16 and 25-11. The Bears were lead by Morgan Frazier with 11 points; Chelsea Reynolds with 5 kills; Madison Ray with 11 points and 4 kills;

DAWGS Claw Lady Bears in 4

An elated group of DAWGS howling

as they've reached match point!

Bow Wow, Bow Wow, wee indeed, Lady Bulldog fans!! If you weren't there, you undoubtedly missed the best entertainment value you couldn't have had anywhere else, with this exciting night of two local District 18-4A foes who were ready to take each other on, all in the setting of the confines of the volleyball-rich and cozy Magnolia High School gymnasium. The excitement ran high as the (21-10, 2-2) Montgomery Lady Bears came into the DAWG House with "a big road win" on their minds and the Lady Bulldogs were standing between them and their goal. The Lady Bears would have to play tough defense and be 'mistake-free' to pull it off and were prepared to do so, while they could only hope they could catch the DAWGS sleeping or perhaps, a (little) over-confident while they have been cruising and handling their first 4 district opponents rather easily. It almost smelled as if there was an upset brewing, but it turned out it was merely indigestion as the DAWGS toughened when they needed to and closed the den in a 'Dawg-eat-Bear' match 3-1.

In the first set the Lady Bulldogs scampered to a 10-2 lead behind a collection of well-earned points: a Meagan Little block (1-0), Courtney Felinski kill (2-0), a Courtney Felinski 'shuffle' kill (3-1), a Paige Holland ace (4-1), a Felinski dink (5-1), a Kelli Stewart kill (6-2), a Katzy Randall hit off the bears' arms (7-2), a Kelli Stewart ace serve (8-2), a Breane Matula hit (9-2), then another Kelli Stewart serving ace (10-2). The DAWGS looked sharp as they aggressively took the fight to their guests. The Lady Bears tried to take the action up-a-notch themselves, but at 20-11, they found themselves even farther apart than they were earlier and the best they could do was trade points to the finish - even though they couldn't afford to give any of them up. The DAWGS finished 'em off with a Meagan Little 'tip' and a 25-15 score.

The Lady Bulldogs struggled in the second set while playing their brand of the Second Set Blues, as they quickly and painfully found themselves trailing by 9 with the score at 3-12. It was even uglier than that as the DAWGS had also burned a time out trying to break the momentum and turn themselves around before it got real embarrassing! Though the Lady Bears were playing well, the Lady Bulldogs scratched and clawed themselves back into the game with a working class effort and closed the gap to 3 at 16-19 with an ace serve from Angi Gould. But the DAWGS lost their Mojo and couldn't keep the ball working their way and dropped this set when they were only able to score 4 to da' Bears' 6 points and come out on the losing end: 20-25.

The Lady Bulldogs really needed to turn this match around again...and quickly! Nothing would soothe their souls now, but a win! A Big WIN! Well the DAWGS took their doctors' advice and trailed but once in this pivotal set, and that was the first point at 0-1!! The DAWGS took advantage of 4 Lady Bears' errors and took off to a 5 point lead at 8-3 before giving 4 back at 8-7, then taking a new 5 point advantage at 15-10 before generously giving back 3 more at 15-13, then taking a larger 7 point edge at 20-13 before both teams took their gloves off for real and fought literally 'hand-to-hand' combat to the finish trading a few extra points yet, still finishing on top: DAWGS 25 to Bears 21.

Tough one and almost agonizing with the pressure. You gotta love this game! I told you you couldn't find a more exciting thing to do than to be at the DAWG House this Wednesday night!

Well, what's going to happen now? Comeback or collapse? After all the fireworks, one couldn't help but wonder how both of these teams would react to a real close set at this point. Well, like reading a good thriller, no one was disappointed... They both did both! The Lady Bulldogs led early behind a blast from Katzy Randall to start it out at 1-0; with a couple of Meagan Little kills (2-0, 4-2) and Kelli Stewart's slamma-jammas (6-3, 7-4), only to have the Lady Bears pull up close to stay on the heels of the DAWGS (and on the scoreboard) to tie the set up when the Lady Bulldogs had a serve receive error at 9-9. The Lady Bears cranked it up a notch with kills of their own and had the edge leading by as much as 3 points at 16-13 before the DAWGS called timeout, regrouped and re-cranked it up, raising the bar several notches themselves. The DAWGS began mauling Da' Bears for 12 straight points as Courtney 'Meatman' Felinski delivered the initial shot that rejuvenated the DAWGS and closed the gap to 2 at 14-16; which lit a raging fire with Katzy Randall who then punished the Lady Bears with 5 impressive kills down the stretch (15-16 to pull the set close, a bullet at 17-16 for the lead after a Lady Bear error, another kill in the middle of the floor at 20-16, then a Happy Birthday gift from the reeling Bears at 22-16, and then the biggest kill of the evening: a big...BIG kill shot at 24-16 in the middle of the court, which brought the crowd on their feet)! Team mate Meagan Little tipped the ball on the next play for match point and the win at 25-16 and capped off another impressive, focused effort and a rewarding match win for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs varsity will be traveling to Willis this Friday 10-3-08 along with the 9th grade, JV teams to try to sweep on the road! BE THERE!!

DAWGS Take Sting Out of Lady Hornets

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs took on the Huntsville Lady Hornets in the DAWG House tonight and cleanly swept their opponent in 3 straight sets (25-15, 25-20, and 25-18) before an appreciative home crowd. The 17-12 green machine is a solid team with plenty of talent, but tonight the Lady Bulldogs played more inspiring, consistent volleyball with timely, spurts of brilliance which was exactly what the doctor ordered to help the DAWGS remain undefeated in District 18-4A play.

same page in their match against Huntsville.

The DAWGS' team effort again was led by senior OH Kelli Stewart's 16 kills and 8 digs; with senior MB Meagan Little contributing 10 kills with 2 blocks; followed by sophomores MB Courtney Felinski's 8 kills and OH Katzy Randall's 7 kills and 13 digs; sophomore OH Madison Kosir's 2 kills; and 7 digs apiece from senior L Hannah Davies and junior Angi Gould.

The DAWGS trailed only once in the first set at 1-2, but as soon as Kelli Stewart tied it up at 2-2 with a shot to the floor and then another at 4-3, the ladies put up a defensive wall and moved their defense around the ball like a school of fish. The Lady Hornets could not break down the wall nor harvest any fish, and were forced to take a back seat to the DAWGS who outscored them 16 to 5 behind some hard hit kills from Katzy Randall (10-6 and cross court at 17-8), a blast from Meagan Little at 12-8; and at least 9 hitting errors, mostly into the net - to put Magnolia in charge at 20 to 8. The out-of-sync Lady Hornets, made a respectable run at the end of the set outscoring the DAWGS 7 to 5, but in the scheme of things, it made little difference or effect on the hungry DAWGS who ended up on top while running away at 25-15.

In the second set, the (somewhat) lackadaisical DAWGS generously dropped 3 straight points before they knew what happened and consequentially took a slower, more patient path in catching up with Huntsville. With the score at 6-8, Kelli Stewart blasted a ball of a Hornet's wing to make it 7-8; then Meagan Little had a patented kill down the middle of the court at 8-8, then did it again at 9-8; only to have Paige Holland tip one at 10-8 to put the Lady Hornets back into their 'Jekyll and Hyde mode' - which meant they were to hit the next kill attempt into the net at 11-8, and to promptly call time out! The time out actually was a good one for Huntsville as they regained a little lost momentum and regrouped to stay closer to the DAWGS until the score reached 20-18, where once again, the Hornets stalled near the winning wire and could only muster 2 points to the DAWGS' five. Ding!... the dinner bell rang again....DAWGS 25 HORNETS 20.

The final set had the DAWGS jumping out to a 7-1 score behind a couple of Kelli Stewart's WMD blasts at 3-1 and 4-1; then uncharacteristically, rolling over and giving 5 points back, drawing the Hornets back in the set at 7-6. The DAWGS maintained a slight 1 point edge over the next 10 points as both teams leveled at 17-16 behind some great, intense play on both sides of the net. But, as been happening most of the season - a couple of blasts from Meagan Little at 12-10, and a quick-set bullet at 13-10, helped ignite the Lady Bulldogs' into a flash fire. Again, Kelli hammered kills at 15-2, and at 16-15 and team mate Katzy Randall blasted a great kill of her own at 17-16. The DAWGS effectively jammed Huntsville at "crunch time" when the match was on the line, by outscoring the Hornets 8 to 2 ....making the finale at 25-18. Truly, solid!

Huh?? Some one explain this one! Okay, the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs took 3 straight sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-14) and a little over an hour to send the Waller Lady Bulldogs packing and on their way back home in this District 18-4A match, played in the revered DAWG HOUSE and under their own Friday night lights. Again, the MHS' DAWGS put together another solid team effort to keep pushing their undefeated 2008 District 18-4A record forward and intact behind senior Kelli Stewart's 12 kills, 2 block assists and 8 digs; sophomore Courtney Felinski's 12 kills, 1 block assist; a very busy senior Meagan Little's 6 kills, 4 serving aces, 1 solo block and 1 block assist; 4 kills from Katzy Randall, and 3 kills and 4 serving aces from Sarah Bacho and 34 assists with 7 digs from the versatile, Paige Holland.

The DAWGS did not start any of the 3 sets out too impressively (losing the first 2 points of all three sets), but they did slowly ramp up at about the same point in each set and then continue their play consistently enough to make the match seem like carbon copies of the same sets.

In the first set (as in the 2nd and 3rd sets) it was Meagan Little who burned the Waller Dawgs with her solid blasts to get Magnolia turned around and on the right track. Kelli Stewart quickly jumped in on the frackus with a kill at 2-2 and it seemed as though Waller suddenly awakened and promptly committed 4 straight errors without knowing the worst was yet to come. Sophomore MB Courtney Felinski executed her "MeatMan Shuffle" with a rocket cross court kill at 6-4, then another kill at 8-6 to set the DAWGS on course for an 8 point run from there at 16-6. The DAWGS were not seriously challenged as they sprinted ahead to 23-8, before they mercifully backed off on their hind paws so Waller could make the loss a little more acceptable scoring 6 points to Magnolia's 2, putting their score in the books at MHS: 25 and WHS:14.

In the second set after Megan's "wake up call" the DAWGS pounced on Waller again, but this time behind Courtney Felinski's kill at 3-4 then another 'Glide to the right' kill at 4-7 before Kelli Stewart let one fly at 5-7, and 2 quick errors later and an ace serve from senior Sarah Bacho - the other Dawgs found themselves trailing at 8-7 with one less time out and the view was not going to be changing! With Magnolia leading through the middle of this set the gap between the teams did not spread as wide as in the previous game as the DAWGS stayed out in front by a modest 3 to 5 point range. Once the score reached 21-15 however, Waller burned their last time out, hoping to turn the momentum around the other way - but instead couldn't get much going on their part and Magnolia responded with a 4 to 1 point blast and ended this one at 25-16. Two down and one to go.

sets with kills to start the DAWGS scoring.

Once again, when Meagan Little hammered a kill, the bell rang and the trailing DAWGS kicked it into 3rd gear with Kelli Stewart and Courtney Felinski leading the way through the opening with kills at 2-2, 4-4, respectively, then Kelli again at 5-4 and a few errors later the DAWGS had their biggest spread of the game at 4 points with the score at 9-5. The DAWGS kept the same margin close throughout the rest of game behind solid hitting from Kelli and Courtney, and with Sarah Bacho who assisted Meagan Little with a block at 14-9 and a kill down the line at 16-12. Once Kelli hammered Wallerites with a shot at 17-13, the life left Waller and they had to try to hold themselves up as Magnolia rolled 'em under their wheels with 6 earned points for the match sweep: Meagan Little's ace serve 20-13; Kelli and Courtney block assist at 21-13; Kelli kill off the defenders arms at 22-13; Courtney doing the same thing at 23-13 and a clean kill at 24-14; and a final tip from Kelli at 25-14.

The DAWGS have earned themselves a little rest and should enjoy the little stretch between Friday night and next Monday 9/29 when Huntsville visits Magnolia and maybe get everyone healthy enough to make a run for the district!

DAWGS Put Mustangs Down at 3-1

As an added bonus from the Bulldog fans (wearing

their black shirts): a "Blackout" acknowledging the

disrupting effects from Hurricane Ike was in order!

The Lady Bulldogs went straight for the juggler in this deciding set for the inaugural match against these two 'evil-twin' teams by squeezing the life out of the Lady Mustangs with a stingy defense and a 'no-nonsense', overpowering offense finishing at 25-9.

For the evening, Courtney Felinski led all of the hitters with 14 Kills and 4 serving aces; followed by Kelli Stewart's 13 kills; Meagan Little's 9 Kills and 4 aces; Katzy Randall had 6 kills; and Paige Holland snuck in 2 kills to go along with her 36 assists for the match.

The DAWGS tore into the Lady Mustangs with a flurry of points resulting from attacks from all over the court: Libero Hannah Davies snuck a backrow kill in at 1-1; Courtney "MeatMan" Felinski strategically placed a dink over the front 'Stang line at 2-1; Kelli Stewart wound up like another WMD missle was to be unloaded, then drew in the double-teaming defenders only to dink the ball to the side at 3-1; then a few more Felinski kills (at 4-2, crosscourt at 5-3, and off the 'Stangs hoofs at 7-3); and the DAWGS were on the way to their second District 18-4A win in as many attempts. The Lady Bulldogs maintained their pressure and held their largest lead of 16 points at 22-6 before cruising into the clubhouse with the final score at 25-9. This audio file picks up at 20-6:
