DAWGS Aces Too Much For Lady MAVS

It was shaping up to be a good one! Both teams looked sharp during their warmup before their match and well matched. The 31-8 Round Rock McNeil Lady Mavericks had cruised through their district with a 12-2 record and were now looking eye to eye with the (32-7) Magnolia Lady Bulldogs and were now meeting in the Area Playoff Class 5A Region II match on neutral ground at the A & M Consolidated HS gymnasium. The Lady Mavericks looked strong in the early part of the season and were ready to take on the streaking DAWGS, who had been standing in the wings watching the earlier match go to 5 games as College Park fell to the other Round Rock entry. The gym was buzzing with anticipation.

Lady Bulldogs Kelli Stewart (L) and Michele

Williams (R) made life miserable for the Lady Mavs.

The Lady Bulldogs wasted no time jumping on the Lady Mavs. Michele Williams and Kelli Stewart teamed up for an assist block at 1-0; then repeated the same move at 2-0; then Michele 'Boom Boom' Williams unleashed a resounding blow to the deck at 3-0 and the Lady Mavs had to be thinking that somehow they ended up playing at the wrong venue and wound up against perennial NCAA powerhouses: Nebraska or Stanford! The Lady Mavs regrouped and pulled it together quickly to knot things up at 7-7, but the DAWGS went on another tear scoring 6 straight behind a Hannah Fort/Kelli Stewart assist block at 9-7; a Brittany Wheaton service ace at 10-7; a Hannah Fort tip at 12-7; and a blast off the Mavs' hands by Kelli Stewart at 13-7.

Lady Bulldog Alicia Shaffer had 5 Aces against the Lady Mavs with her serving.

The teams traded points for a few exchanges until Kelli Stewart placed a beautiful tip in the center of the Mav's court at 16-10 when the DAWGS unveiled their secret weapon .... the dreaded Alicia Shaffer jump serve!! (O.K., maybe it's not new to us who have been following Alicia's remarkable serving - but it was certainly something foreign to the Lady Mavs!) McNeil had trouble dealing with Alicia's serving as she closed the set out notching 3 of her 5 aces for the evening! Here's the audio picking up with the DAWGS howling in Set 1:
