I'm sure the beds the ladies fall into tonight will feel like soft, warm clouds of comfort after what they've been through today. It was NOT a good day to be a Lady Bulldog and the good news about the bad news, is that when they wake up tomorrow-- it will be behind them. After winning a match this morning against Bridge City at the Pearland Tournament, the Lady Bulldogs lost in 3 games to Dobie and quickly departed to Langham Creek High School where they were swept by the well-rested Lady Lobos for their first district loss. Just like the wolves in the mural on the gymnasium wall -the Lobos crouched low in the brush while circling the lost and error-prone Lady Bulldogs then attacked quickly from everywhere like a hungry pack!
Game #1 started with Langham Creek jumping on the lethargic Lady Bulldogs 7-1, only to have the ladies roar back and go ahead 9-8 and remain a slugfest until Magnolia looked like they were going to be strong enough to put it out of reach at 23-20. Somehow Magnolia had maintained a slim lead with numerous service errors, one after another, and still looked like they were going to draw first blood . The Lady Lobos then called a time out and came back to win 25-23 and before they knew it, the opportunity was gone like a scent in the wind. Looking back, the Lady Bulldogs probably wish they had just got 2 more serves in!
Game #2 was a laugher (or make that a 'crier') as the Lady Lobos out-ran the Lady Bulldogs 25-15 as Magnolia continually, committed too many unforced errors and Langham Creek played solid, but not necessarily 'over-powering' ball against the Lady Bulldogs. Let's just say they were more 'opportunistic'...

Michele Williams (23) and Lauren Michael (22) team up to convince the
Lady Lobos setter, Kristin Matteson to play the ball somewhere else.
Game #3 at first looked like the Bulldogs were about ready to make a stand and turn this match around and came back from 4 points down at 11-15 to close it to 2 at 14-16, before the Lady Lobos blew them out by outscoring Magnolia 9 points to 5 - and end the score and match with a 25-19 victory. Much of the same...too many fundamental errors against a grateful team.
All-in-all, it was a tough and disheartening day, topping off a brutal 48+ hours. All the momentum, hard work, practice time, noteriety, and all the fear the future Lady Bulldog's opponents were beginning to have, had spiraled down the drain. Though all seems lost in just 2 days, the ladies can still turn the train around and have a chance to re-group and form a solid foundation that continually builds momentum so the Lady Bulldogs peak at the end of one of their best season ever! It's been done before. Maybe this Labor Day weekend will give the ladies time to recharge their batteries; figure out how to get 'back-on-track' and back to working hard on the fundamentals of volleyball with the intention of cutting down on some of their (future) mistakes, and maybe, just maybe, they'll be able to get their 2 serves back!!
