The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs were upended by the Brenham Cubettes in 4 sets (25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 15-24) before a partisan, boisterous crowd in the Brenham gymnasium tonight. Both teams are battling for the top spot in the District 18-4A race as the Lady Bulldogs advantage has now evened out as both teams have one (district) loss apiece - and to each other.
OHL Kelli Stewart started the first set
with 7 kills against the Cubettes.
The DAWGS opened up the first set with a 5 point edge at 6-1 and continued with the margin midway through the set at 16-11, until the Cubettes ran a 5 point streak and tied the set at 16-16. The DAWGS quickly recovered with kills from Kelli Stewart and Katzy Randall and rolled on, outscoring the Cubettes 9 to 4 and finishing 25-20.
Courtney Felinski (6) and Breane Matula (5)
cutting off the Cubette attck with a block.
Again the DAWGS jumped out in front of Brenham in the second set owning a 4 point edge at 9-5 and seemingly in-control. But the DAWGS collapsed as the Cubettes turned the momentum around scoring 5 straight, tying the score and forging ahead at 10-10. The Cubettes then reduced their errors and pulled away from the DAWGS in a slow and consistent manner, outlasting the Lady Bulldogs 15 to 12 and securing the second set at 25-22.
The Cubettes kept senior libero Hannah Davies
busy shown here going after one of her 12 digs.
In the third set, the playing field had equalized and both teams traded the lead, battling like 2 champions would and found themselves tied at 23-23. The Cubettes took the all-important next point at 24-23 with a shot off the DAWGS outstretched hands. The next play started and the DAWGS were in attack mode when the side referee came across the court (while the game was in play) calling time out, and conferred with the up referee. When the Magnolia coaching staff asked what happened they were given the RED card and a point was given to the Cubettes. Yes, the GAME POINT!! ...... If there ever was a time when a game was given to a team by an official call...this was it! The Magnolia crowd naturally was stunned, shocked and went silent while the Brenham side of the gymnasium was practically doing back-flips while elated with the controversial, hometown decision. Cubettes: 25 DAWGS: 23.
Meagan Little covering Kelli (L) and Courtney (R)
with a pass from a tipped Cubette ball.
The deflated DAWGS didn't open this set as they did in the others, and trailed the sky-high Cubettes at first then tied the set at 3-3 and traded the lead until both of the teams unknotted themselves at 8-8. The DAWGS had 3 errors in the next 5 points as Brenham hammered ahead at 13-8. From there, it was simply 'more of the same' as the Cubettes basically doubled their scoring effort, running off 12 points to the DAWGS: 7 and scalded the DAWGS off with a 25-15 celebration.
The Lady Bulldogs effort was led by Kelli Stewart's 19 kills, 16 digs and 2 aces, Katzy Randall added 9 kills, as did Courtney Felinski who had 6 along with Meagan Little who also had 1 ace to go with her solo and assist blocks. Hannah Davies had 12 digs; Paige Holland had 7 digs, 39 assists, 1 ace and a solo and assist block.
The Lady Bulldogs will continue their district play with their next match at the DAWG House on MHS Homecoming Friday evening Oct. 17 taking on the Caney Creek Lady Panthers at 5 PM. The Freshmen will also be playing at 5 PM in the other gym, with the JV to follow.
