OH and All Around Katzy Randall taking on
'any-and-all comers' in an 8 kill outing against Waller.
In the first set, Kelli Stewart opened the DAWGS' scoring with a dink, followed by Courtney Felinski who added a dink of her own at 6-1; then Kelli threw in a few points from a backrow kill at 7-2, and a pair of aces at 8-2 and 9-2; which opened the door for a Breane Matula kill on the right side at 10-4 and a Katzy Randall hammer in the middle at 12-5. The big DAWGS didn't make it any easier on the other Wallerdogs when Meagan Little jammed them with a kill at 15-6 in the middle of the court, then followed it up with a shot at 16-6 that Waller had trouble returning and topped it all off with a block at 18-6. The DAWGS pressed on with a Paige Holland kill at 20-10; then a Courtney Felinski/Breane Matula combo block at 22-10 and another Felinski bullet at 23-10 to set up the final point of the first set: another Kelli Stewart ace serve.....25-11....Ding! Ding!
A dominating presence by OH Kelli Stewart resulting
in a 'Happy Birthday' kill for the DAWGS.
Set 2 and another solid performance from the big DAWGS. Magnolia played well defensively, passing the ball, transitioning their play and moving together extremely well ..... it's called, "being in the ZONE!" Katzy Randall lit 'em up with kills at 2-1; a backrow smash at 5-2; a missile in the middle of the court at 7-3; and an ace midway through the set at 14-7. In between the action, Kelli Stewart took advantage of a Happy Birthday gift at 3-1; a great shot down the court line at 6-2; then another one at 15-10; a kill at 18-13; and at 20-15; a trio of serving aces at 22-15, 23-15, and 24-15; and a topper with a kill to end all the madness at 25-16!
There were some great volleys in this set as the Wallerites worked extra hard to stay up with the 'lead' DAWGS. One in particular was an exceptionally, athletic save on an errant ball off the DAWGS' hands combined with a backwards pass by the newly activated, sophomore speedster DS Latasha Jones at 8-4; and another resulting from a great, defensive team effort by the DAWGS in another long volley at 21-15, which ultimately kept the other Bulldogs at bay. Two down and one to go....
Set 3 started out with a Kelli Stewart dink at 1-0, a shot at 3-1; a missile at 5-3; a compliment of 2 back-to-back kills from SuperSoph Katzy Randall at 8-4 and 9-4; and then another kill at 10-6. Kelli continued her assault on her next rotation with a dink at 12-9, a blast at 13-10, and Ashlyn Newmann/Courtney Felinski teamed up on a classic combo block at 14-10; followed up nicely by Courtney who put the ball down on the floor at 16-11 and the DAWGS maintained their edge throughout. Katzy Randall kept the margin at 6 with a kill at 17-11; Kelli took it a step farther with another serving ace to make it 18-11 and the DAWGS stayed in control through a slew of unearned points, until Meagan Little hammered a kill at 22-18 and then surprised the hosts with a dink at 23-18. The last earned point came from an ace serve from Sarah Bacho at 24-18, who was coming off a big victory of her own (yes, that's right!!,,,your 2008 MHS Homecoming Queen, folks!!) A fruitless attempt by Waller as MB Courtney
Felinski (6) and OHR Ashlyn Newmann (11)
kept the ball on the other side of the net.
The final for the sweep was 25-18. The real DAWGS were led by Kelli Stewart's 16 kills and 7 aces; with Katzy Randall close behind with 8 kills, 12 digs and 2 aces; Meagan Little with 6 kills; Courtney Felinski with 5 kills and 2 assist blocks; Paige Holland's 26 assists; and Hannah Davies' 5 assists with her 13 digs.
Coach J celebrated her '200th Win'
milestone tonight against Waller.
Congratulations to Coach Terri Johnson for guiding the Lady Bulldogs to her 200th victory. Coach J has done such a super job with the volleyball program at Magnolia High School and have been the "class of each district" the DAWGS have played in. A job well done, Coach J!!
The DAWGS will be on the road, taking on Huntsville, Friday evening @ 5 PM (another homecoming game!) JV to follow, freshmen in other gym at 5 & 6 PM.
