Tigers OverTake DAWGS

The 5A Katy Lady Tigers visited the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs' DAWG House on Tuesday and left "fat n' happy" after handling the outgunned Lady Bulldogs in 5 sets (26-24, 23-25, 25-17, 22-25 and 15-8 in the tiebreaker). The injured but eager DAWGS put up a great fight, but in the end they could not turnaround the momentum, as the Lady Tigers surged ahead in the "first to 15 point" tiebreaker. Both teams seemed to be equally matched as their best-of-five sets in the series alternated from winning the first one to losing the second one, winning the third one to losing the fourth one - and,... you get the idea.

Sophomore MB Courtney Felinski shut

down the Tiger attack with this block.

In the first set the DAWGS came out blazing away: up by 4 at 10-6 and clinging tightly to a 2 point lead at 21-19 when the Lady Tigers called timeout; only to have Katy block the next shot and somehow send the DAWGS into a un-timely spiral where 4 errors were committed at "crunch time" and the Lady Bulldogs were on the short end of a 24-26 loss.

Set 2 started out with Katy handling a small lead as both teams alternated points until the match was tied at 10-10 when the Lady Bulldogs aggressively took control and held a 4 point lead at 20-16 and looked as though they were cruising to an easy victory. Well, the DAWGS won, but it wasn't easy. Even though the Tigers played a little better at the end and made up a lot of ground, their errors gave the set to the appreciative DAWGS who came out on top at 25-23.

Senior Lady Bulldog OH Kelli Stewart hammered home

this kill for the win in the second set against Katy.

Set 3 opened with the Tigers scoring 8 straight to force an early Bulldog time out at 0-8 and started things rapidly going downhill from there!! The Lady Tigers continued to keep control throughout and opened their lead to a 9 point spread at 20-11 before the teams basically traded even points (except the DAWGS couldn't afford them) and finished off this one with a 25-17 shellacking.

Even the Lady Bulldog cheerleaders were

praying for DAWGIE DIVINE Intervention!

Set 4 and it was a 'Do or Die' set. Win and you have a chance to win the next one and the match. Lose and well, it could either be a long ride home or a real short one depending on who can close out this match! The DAWGS again trailed early 1-5, then turned the tables to tie it up at 5-5 and the seesaw battle was on the way. The set was tied at 13-13 midway in the set before those pesky Tigers ran up a 4 point advantage at 20-16 and it started to go black! Three straight kills by Kelli Stewart drew Magnolia to within 3, then a couple of Tiger errors later: a Courtney Felinski tip tied it up at 21-21. A quick service error put the DAWGS behind at 21-22, then another Felinski kill tied it up again. The shell-shocked Tigers hit the next one in the net and a Paige Holland kill won the set (25-22) and tied the match (2-2) and suddenly the DAWG House was buzzing again!

The DAWGS gave it all they had

"..with a little help from their friends!"

Set 5: the Tie Breaker... the DAWGS came out a little leg weary while the Tigers (who apparently were already contemplating their quick ride home) immediately pounced on the Lady Bulldogs and had them down by 4 at midpoint 8-4 when a time out was ordered by the DAWGS. When play resumed, the Tigers statistically duplicated their efforts and ran up 7 points to Magnolia's 4, (15-8) and the marathon was over with Katy on top (3-2).

Kelli Stewart led the DAWGS with 24 kills and 2 Aces followed by a strong showing from sophomore MB Courtney Felinski's 13 kills; senior Meagan Little with 8 Kills and 2 Aces; junior Angi Gould's 8 kills. Senior Chelsea Rauscher led the servers with 4 Aces and setter Paige Holland dished out 51 assists to go with a couple of Aces and a kill of her own.
