DAWGS Control Brenhan Cubettes

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs made short work of their former rival: Brenham Cubettes tonight in the DAWG House by sweeping their match 25-16, 25-20, and 25-16 in front of an appreciative and lively crowd. The DAWGS played a solid match utilizing an impressive, offensive warchest; a good TEAM defensive effort and crisp passing thrown in to control the flow and momentum of their (18-6) visitors.

From the beginning, the DAWGS seemed to have the Cubettes number.

In the first set, Alicia Shaffer opened the DAWGS' arsenal with one of her 5 aces for the evening jumping to a 2-1 lead.... then kept the Cubettes dancing on their heels in the backrow with her deadly serves. When Meagan Little pounded a point off Brenham's hands at 8-5; then Hannah Fort's kill at 10-6 and Shaffer's unleashed kill at 12-6 ... the DAWGS were off to the races and rolled out to a 20-12 lead behind a patented Michele 'Boom Boom' Williams' SLAMMA-HAMMA kill. The DAWGS held on to the lead to the finish, scoring 5 to Brenham's 4 points behind Shaffer's great kill shot down the left line at 24-15 and then topped off with a massive kill by Kelli Stewart that snuffed the life out of the Cubettes at 25-16. Brenham had to regroup when the teams switched sides and try to find a way to get at the Lady Bulldogs.

OHR Meagan Little and MB Michele Williams threw up a wall against Brenham.

Set 2 started with another strong start by the DAWGS with a Kelli Stewart kill at 2-1, then a couple of Alicia Shaffer service aces at 3-1 and 5-1, and followed with a 'Boom Boom' block at 6-1. Brenham came back with a couple of points when a 'High Flyin' Kelli Stewart hammered a shot in the middle at 7-3 and it looked like it was the start of a rout. But it was not to be. Actually, it was the Cubettes who went on a spree and scored 10 to Magnolia's 6 points to knot the set up at 13-13 and it was a timely Brittany Wheaton ace that awakened the napping DAWGS at 14-13 that breathed new life into the home team. A couple of Cubette passing miscues later, resulted in two Alicia Shaffer "Happy Birthday" kills at 15-15 and 16-15 and suddenly the DAWGS were out of their pen. An impressive Williams-Shaffer block assist at 17-15; a Williams' "Glide" at 18-16; a Jamie Kaleh kill and Hannah Fort tip opened the score up to 24-20.... and it took 3 tries for the winning point, but Alicia Shaffer got it - and Magnolia was 2 up and 2/3 of the way through this match with the score at 25-20. It was a good, come-from-behind victory for the DAWGS and a renewed sense of confidence for the ladies!

All Around Jamie Kaleh stretching for one of her

6 digs while team mate Alicia Shaffer looks on.

Set 3 began with Kelli Stewart dinking a kill to tie things up at 1-1... when Alicia Shaffer went to work dropping a couple of service aces on the court 'end-line' at 2-1 and 4-1. Michele Williams added another kill at 7-2; then again at 10-2 and the Cubettes had to be starting to think about the long ride home. Coach J opened the bench up for some valuable playing experience for some of the players and the Lady Bulldogs responded well. Breanne Matula had a perfectly placed tip at 13-6; Kelli Stewart punished them for 2 points at 16-6 and 17-7; and Michele Williams added a couple of kills to keep the DAWGS comfortably ahead by 10 at 20-10. All the DAWGS had to do was coast to the finish... and Hannah Fort helped close the Cubettes out with a block at 21-14; a kill at 23-16; and a 'classic' Fort/Stewart combo block puncuating a 25-16 statement that this match belonged to Magnolia!

The Lady Bulldogs strategizing as Coach J leads the way.

Unofficially, Alicia Shaffer led the DAWGS with 9 Kills, 9 Digs, 5 Aces, and a block assist; followed by Kelli Stewart's 8 Kills, 1 Block and 2 Block Assists; Jamie Kaleh's 6 Kills, 6 Digs, 1 Block Assist; Michele Wiliams' 6 Kills, 2 Blocks, 4 Block Assists; followed by Hannah Fort's 4 Kills, 1 Block Assist and Meagan Little's 3 Kills and 1 Block Assist. Hannah Davies finished with 17 Assists and 5 Digs; followed by Paige Holland's 12 Assists; and Kati Michael's 3 Assists. Brittany Wheaton had another spectacular evening with 9 digs.

Wow, the ladies are on an 18 match HOME win streak going back to last year and will be visiting a tough St Agnes team on Friday night tentatively scheduled for 6:30 PM! The ladies appreciate your continued support!
