Lady Bulldog Picked as "Defensive Dandy"

The recognition has been long overdue folks, but now the Dawg is out of the pen .....!!

It seems defensive players are commonly overlooked when watching volleyball action unless there's an obivous mistake or unbelievable "save" on the court. But their contribution to the team's success has always been undeniable when you talk with the coaches, players and anyone who knows anything about volleyball! The diving "save", resulting in the perfect "pass", transitioning the team from a defensive posture to an offensive posture is literally, a thing of beauty, and arguably the classic core 'value' in this game! It's the consumate team-mate who (at all costs) continually does the 'little things' right; clicking along like a dependable link in the chain that makes the difference. And yet, little-to-no notoriety. Everyone wants to talk about size and power as being the keys to winning, even though they cannot see the forest through the trees (and bushes).

Well, we're glad to see that this great group of players are getting their due! If they can dig it up and play (all the way around) high school and/or club ladies' volleyball and were nominated by their coach; they're on this list compiled and just released by PrepVolleyball's John Tawa.

The list is called the "PrepVolleyball's Defensive Dandy" list, and this group of players are affectionally called "Dandy Lions." Tawa explains, "The players on this list are all-around high school or club talents who project as back row animals at the next level. Within each grouping, there are four teams of 12 (because kids like to be on a team) with 13 others following who receive honorable mention recognition. The designation is largely subjective, I’ll admit, because it’s much more difficult to determine who is the absolute best in the back row than, say, an outside hitter, whose height, jumping ability and power provide discriminating measuring sticks...."

Lady Bulldog Defensive / All Around

Alicia Shaffer

3rd Team: "Dandy Lion"

Alicia had 311 kills for the Lady Bulldogs in 2006, and is projected as a defensive dandy at the Division I level. As a junior, Alicia’s already a recognized back row force at Magnolia High School, earning All Montgomery County and District 15-5A Defensive Player of the Year honors after piling up 430 digs as well as being one of the two primary passers. Last year Alicia was recognized for the same award, and is a 3rd Team selection this year.

CONGRATULATIONS, WAY TO GO, ALICIA !!

GO LADY BULLDOGS!!!
