DAWGS Sweep through 1st Day Pairings

The DAWGS began the first round of the 2007 Pearland Volleyball Classic with two well earned victories - one over Stony Point (25-8 and 25-12) early Thursday morning and the other against Hebron (25-18 and 25-20) later in the afternoon.

The DAWGS surged forward in set 1 against Hebron midway through the game at 10-9 and slowly pulled away with some great kills by OH Kelli Stewart (12-9 and 13-11) and OH Jamie Kaleh (14-12) which may have ignited the team. The Michele "Boom Boom Glide-a-rooskie" blast from the right really got them going (before Michele was 'rotated-out') and replaced by MB Hannah Fort who immediately scored the next 5 points for the good-guys (that's us!) - starting at 17-13 (nice block); a tip at 18-14; another block with an assist by Kelli Stewart at 19-14; and then another booming kill at 20-14. All that was needed after that was for Jamie Kaleh to Ace the next Bulldog's serve and for OHR Ashlynn Newman to kill a shot onto the right side of Hebron's court at 22-14. After calling their second time out, Hebron tried to rally the troops and mount a charge, but it turned out to be "too little - too late" and fell short when Hannah Fort ended the game at 25-18 with a kill.

In set 2 - Magnolia came out playing aggressively and started 'raising the bar' while Hebron responded to the challenge, and claimed an early 5-2 advantage and held onto the lead by 3 midway through the game at 12-9, before both Hannah Fort and Kelli Stewart began blasting away and dominating both sides of the net. After a series of errors, Hebron called a time out trailing at 14-19 only to have a Michele Williams' Boom Boom slam greet them when they returned to the court at 20-14; and once a Meagan Little backrow missle shocked 'em at 21-14 .... well, let's just say "the DAWGS were pretty much ruling-the-roost" from this point forward.... DAWGS Sweep Falcons Out of DAWG House

It's always great to have the DAWGIE Nation student body back in the House!!

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs put the "pedal to the metal" tonight at the DAWG House and overwhelmed the Lady Falcons from Jersey Village in 3 quick sets 25-10, 25-15 and 25-20. The team was running like a fine tuned machine with great hitting, blocking, passing, serving, digging, and setting and when it's working like it was - either get on, or get out of the way!

Lady Bulldog junior Hannah Davies kept the Lady

Falcons guessing all night where the play was going!

LSU bound senior MB Michele Williams lit the house up for 19 Kills, 1 solo block and 2 Block Assists, while OH/All Around Alicia Shaffer skinned 9 kills, 7 Digs and 3 Aces; and the ball was spread around nicely. Hannah Davies had a great match dishing out 24 assists while Paige Holland followed with 9 - and both kept hitters Kelli Stewart and Jamie Kaleh in the mix with 4 kills apiece. Jamie also had a busy night with 2 Block Assists. Ashlynn Newman, Meagan Little, Hannah Fort and Katie Kreft had a kill apiece. Libero Brittany Wheaton had another outstanding evening with 7 Digs and 2 Aces to her credit. Another great TEAM effort!!

What a night for Michele Williams! 19 Kills with 1 Solo and 2 Block Assists.

The DAWGS jumped on the Lady Falcons in the first set 5-0 behind Michele Williams' dominance in the front line and some nifty serving by Alicia Shaffer and went on a tear from there driving their advantage to a 16-3 lead behind some great hitting by Kelli Stewart and a bevy of Michele Williams' slamma-rooskies that rocked the foundation in the House. The DAWGS coasted from there outscoring the Falcons 9 to 7 and finish 25-10.

Lady Bulldogs Alicia Shaffer (l), Katie Kreft (m) and Jamie Kaleh (r) on the prowl...

Set 2 ... pretty much the same cast of characters and same great DAWG play, though the Lady Falcons continued to work hard while elevating their level of play. Coach J was able to weave some 'game-hungry' DAWGS onto the court to gain some valuable playing experience during these two games while the action was intense and the ladies performed very well. The ladies maintained a steady lead after breaking free of a 4-4 tie; then began building another run of points at a solid pace from 2 point advantage to 3, to 4, to 5, to 6, to 7,..and up to 10; while doing just about everything right! You gotta love it when it all comes together like this! Set 2 is inscribed: Magnolia 25 Jersey Village 15.

Lady Bulldog DS Lynnsay Manning transitioning the team to offense.

Set 3...much of the same and Jersey Village was not giving in... Again the DAWGS jumped out front, but the Lady Falcons caught up at 9-9 and went ahead briefly at 12 to 11. A Katie Kreft kill at 16-14 pumped the DAWGS up and started their 9 to 6 run that was highlighted by a couple of Kelli Stewart kills down the stretch at 23-19 and an amazing kill down the right sideline, blistering the Falcons for a 24-20 Magnolia lead. The Lady Falcons tried to make a run, but a net violation dashed any hopes of a comeback and the final score of 25-20 was recorded and in the books. That makes 3 straight sweeps for the DAWGS on their home turf! Break out the brooms!..... Wow, or should I say "Bow wow?"

GREAT JOB LADIES!!

GO LADY BULLDOGS!!

JV and 9A Catch Lady Falcons Nesting

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs JV and 9A teams both got by the Jersey Village Lady Falcons tonight at the DAWG House in some exciting matches.

The 9A ladies handled Jersey Village in 2 games with some momentum built up from their weekend volleyball tournament championship at Bryan, Texas. Nice sweep ladies!

The Lady DAWGS JV caught the Jersey Village Falcons napping at 23-23 in Game 2 when Jamie Paulson had a kill to put Magnolia on top at 24-23, and when a last serve receive error by the Falcons put the game in the win column for the DAWGS and also tied the match at 1-1.... the Lady Falcons had to be wondering what just happened!

In Game 3 the teams were tied many times in the set, 13-13, 15-15, 16-16, 19-19, 20-20, 21-21 and at 23-23 when Jersey Village again napped and a serve-receive error opened the Falcons' eyes trailing at 24-23, when whammm.......the DAWGS chomped down hard with a kill at the net and the deciding set went Magnolia's way at 25-23. Game and Match!!

GREAT COMEBACK LADIES!!!

Magnolia Silver Champions at Spring Branch Tournament

The Cy Falls Golden Eagles gave the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs all they could handle in the championship match in the Silver Division of the 2007 Spring Branch Volleyball Tournament. After all the drama, excitement, and the combat in the first outstanding, nail-biting set that went to 30-28 ... the teams found themselves locked into another battle and really going at it!

The DAWGS trailed at the onset of Set 2 and tied at 5-5 behind 2 Michele Williams 'SlammaRooskie -Boom Boom 'shots; one at 1-1, and another at 3-3. OH All Around Jamie Kaleh put the DAWGS on top with a serving Ace at 7-5, followed by an Alicia Shaffer kill at 8-5; then after a 4-hit violation, Cy Falls called a timeout, only to be greeted by an unbelievable volley of great volleyball culminating with a Jamie Kaleh backrow kill at 10-5. The Golden Eagles were losing ground from this point forward as Lady Bulldog MB Hannah Fort opened up her arsenal with 3 straight kills at 12-6, 13-6, and 14-7. Cy Falls made up 6 points to Magnolia's 2 behind some great play of their own and closed the lead to 3 at 16-13, before another great volley at 17-13 went Magnolia's way.

Lady Bulldog MB Michele Williams was a repeat All Tournament

selection at the 2007 Spring Branch Tournament.

Jamie Kaleh's block at 18-13 pushed the set a little farther out of reach, until a couple of Kelli Stewart kills (one at 19-14 and the other at 22-15) made the DAWGS seem unstoppable. The dagger came on the next play as Hannah Fort blocked the Golden Eagles' attack for a 23-15 edge and the Eagles were starting to nosedive while running out of feathers. The audio file (below) finishes up from there:

DAWGS and BOBCATS in a Fight

Game 5 and both Cy Fair and Magnolia want this one real bad. The teams have split their matches Mag 25 to CyFair's 19, then Mag 17 to CyFair's 25; followed by Mag's 25 to Cy's 23; and most previously played: Mag 14 to Cy's 25 and this one's going point by point - all for the bragging rights! Can't think of a better reason to play.

This thriller started out with a Michele Williams' Boom Boom Glide for a great blast at 1-0, then a Michele hit for a 2-1 lead kept things neck and neck until a Kelli Stewart and Hannah Fort assist block tied it all up again at 5-5. Hannah Fort kept it close at 6-6 and 7-7 with two timely kills; but when Michele put a shot down at 9-8 to put the dogs in the lead it looks like the DAWGS are poised to scamper to a winning finish. Abruptly, Cy Fair called a time out and killed the momentum at 9-9, when this audio file takes over:

Lady Bulldogs lose Heartbreaker to Pearland

The #4 state ranked Magnolia Lady Bulldogs lost a heart breaker in the 2nd round of the Spring Branch ISD volleyball tournament to #11 state ranked Pearland Lady Oilers in the best (2 out of 3 series) by the scores of 25-17, 24-26, 21-25 in a very good matchup of two equally talented teams.

The Lady Dawgs picked up where they left off against Foster earlier in the afternoon by jumping on top 15-5 before the Lady Oilers knew what bit them. The Pearland Lady Oilers settled down and the teams basically traded points to end game 1 with Magnolia winning 25-17. Britttany Wheaton continued her stellar play in back row with some amazing digs and she also had 2 service aces to lead the team to its G1 win. The '3 Amigas' (seniors MB Hannah Fort, OH Alicia Shaffer, and MB Michele Williams) led the team offensively with 3 kills each.

Game 2 was a true classic with both teams battling hard and furious to a 10-10 draw early on. From that point on, the teams traded points until Pearland began pulling away at 15-18. A back row kill by Alicia Shaffer and an ace serve by Jamie Kaleh along with a nice dig by Alicia and block assist by Hannah Fort and Alicia brought the Dawgs back to even at 18-18. A Hannah Fort solo block and block assist with Kelli Stewart gave the Dawgs a 21-19 lead heading down the stretch before the Oilers rallied to tie the game at 21-21. A kill by Alicia and a Michele "Boom Boom" Williams slam had the Dawgs up 24-23 and smelling victory. However, an unforced error and two Pearland kills closed the door on the Lady Dawgs at 24-26. The inability to put the talented Lady Oilers away would prove to be costly and hopefully a hard lesson learned as the Dawgs move on in their quest to win their first ever state championship volleyball title at the 5A level.

Game 3 was a battle of wills from the very first point as both team battled for every ball on the court and near the net. An early ace by Alicia Shaffer and back-to-back kills by Hannah Fort and Michele Williams mixed in with some excellent defensive plays by Brittany Wheaton and the Lady Dawgs were even at 10-10. A couple of ace serves by Alicia on 2nd rotation and the teams were knotted up again at 13-13. A Jamie Kaleh kill several points later and the Dawgs were up 17-16 heading down the stretch. A 4 point run for the Lady Oilers had them up 17-20 before Alicia Shaffer's solo block helped cut the margin to 19-20. Another Alicia kill cut the margin to 20-21 before the Pearland ladies went on a closing 4-1 run with a couple of blocks at the net to end the contest. The Lady Dawgs committed 13 unforced errors in game 3 and only had 1 block in this rubber game which contriubuted to their loss.

Shaffer and Michele Williams led the Lady Dawgs with 10 kills each. Hannah Fort had 4 block assists and one solo block to lead the team in that category. Alicia also was credited with 3 service aces for the contest and Brittany Wheaton contibuted one ace.

It doesn't get any easier for our traveling band of warriors. Next up is another top 10 state ranked foe and former district rival, and currently undefeated Cy-Fair High School at their place on Friday at 6:30 PM. Come on out and support the Lady Dawgs. This will be another epic battle of volleyball Titans in the Houston area.

GO LADY BULLDOGS!!

Bulldogs Fly by Falcons

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs grew their wings flew by the Foster Lady Falcons in round 1 of the Spring Branch ISD tournament by scores of 25-10 and 25-9. The Lady Bulldogs were hitting on all cylinders in this match from start to finish.

Hannah Davies started the action with a great serve that was sent back over the net where Michele Williams was waiting for an easy point. From that point on the Lady Bulldogs never looked back. The Dawgs played nearly error-free ball to dispose of their opponents from Richmond, TX in quick order. Alicia Shaffer and Michele Williams led the offensive attack with 5 kills each. Shaffer continued her excellent serving with 4 aces and Kelli Stewart followed with 3 ace serves of her own. Hannah Fort and Kelli led the team with 3 block assists each. Jamie Kaleh led the team with 4 kills in game 2.

It was a complete team effort with Brittany Wheaton patrolling back row and Kati Michael and Paige Holland setting the table for the attackers. The only downside to this match (if there was one) was that setter Hannah Davies had to sit out the remainder of the match after serving because her jersey was not identical with the rest of the team......

Unofficial Stats:
Kills: Michele Williams 5; Alicia Shaffer 5; Jamie Kaleh 4; Kelli Stewart 3; Ashlyn Newman 1.
Aces: Alicia Shaffer 4; Kelli Stewart 3; Hannah Davies and Brittany Wheaton 1.
Block assists: Hannah Fort 3; Kelli Stewart 3; Michele Williams 2; Ashlyn Newman 1.
Digs: Kati Michael 3; Alicia Shaffer 3; Paige Holland 1.

DAWGS Sweep Cougars at Tomball

Looks like a happening .... a Lady Bulldog Block Party!!!

It must've been DejaVu. It had to be ... 2 sweeps in 2 days; both Cougars; and both good teams and former district rivals! The DAWGS first piled on 'em and then put the hammer down on Tomball tonight taking the Cougars down in 3 sets (25-10,25-19, and 25-20). Again it was a total team effort from the Lady Bulldogs (7-2) with intimidating jump serving that kept Tomball a little off guard and a little skiddish.

In the opening game it looked at first like the DAWGS were the ones who were nervous. Tomball jumped out with a 2-0 lead, taking advantage of 2 Bulldog serve-receive errors, then turned around and had 2 errors of their own, tying the set up at 2-2. Michele Williams really confused them with a left handed kill at 3-2; Jamie Kaleh gave them a glimpse of a fast moving missle at 4-2; then Alicia Shaffer freaked them with her serving at 5-2 and 6-2 and before they knew it, Magnolia had scored 6 straight. The defense became even stingier going forward while Michele had a kill at 9-4; Hannah Fort perfected her 'Hannah Glide' at 11-5 and Alicia's "Happy Birthday" gift at the net stretched the DAWGS to their biggest lead in the first set to 8 at 13-5. The shell-shocked COOGS could only muster 5 more points in the game while committing a ton of errors - while their rivals from the Dark Side (yep, that's Magnolia) served their way to a 25-10 finish.

Lady Bulldog Alicia Shaffer throwing one of her 9 heaters for the evening.

Game 2, Part Deaux opened with a Hannah Davies serve that was unreturnable (by any mere mortal) for a 1-0 lead before Magnolia committed the next 2 errors - as in the first game. Kelli Stewart turned that around with a kill tying the teams at 2-2; then both teams went on error sprees. It wasn't pretty, but the COOGS were up 12-8 and it was starting to feel like the rivalry was awakening. The climb was treacherous beginning with a Hannah Fort block at 10-12; then an Alicia Shaffer shot off the COOGS defenders' hands at 11-13; a Hannah Fort/Kelli Stewart block assist at 13-13; then a few errors later - Alicia Shaffer surgically slams one down the right sideline at 14-15; a Jamie Kaleh kill at 16-17; a 'Boom Boom' Glide kill at 18-18 then a Williams' block on the very next point at 19-18; followed by another Kelli Stewart kill at 20-18; and the COOGS began to lose steam and close down. The DAWGS put 5 points up with Tomball adding 1 and the final was in the books at 25-19.

Kelli Stewart (l) and Michele Williams (r) teaming up to trap a Cougar.

Here we are in Game 3, the swing game in a best 3-of-5 series as it started out like it was an Errorapolusa....as both teams committed nothing but errors on each and every play (but one) until the score reached a DAWGIE low of 5 points to the COUGARS' biggest lead of 4 - at a total of 9 points. Paige Holland rallied the troops and picked the DAWGS up with a service point at 6-9; Hannah added 3 kills at 7-9, 8-10 and temporarily tied the teams up at 11-11; then 4 more errors in the next 5 plays put the score at 12-15 and it didn't look too good for the DAWGS. Alicia Shaffer put a kill down at 13-15; then Kelli Stewart added another Cougar pelt to her collection at 14-16; then a couple of Jamie Kaleh kills (at 15-16 and at 17-17) doused whatever hopes Tomball had of pouncing on their DAWGIE rivals in this last game and keeping them down. This audio file picks up the action from there:

Alicia Shaffer had 9 Kills, 8 Digs, 5 Aces, and 1 Block Assist; Jamie Kaleh had 7 Kills, 6 Digs; Michele Williams had 6 Kills, 1 Solo block, 1 Block Assist; Hannah Fort with 6 Kills, and 3 Block Assists; Kelli Stewart had 2 Kills with 2 Block Assists; Hannah Davies finished with 14 Assists; and Paige Holland had 8 Assists. Lady Bulldogs Overpower Cy Creek Cougars

Ashlynn Newman (11) and Hannah Fort made it tough all night for the Lady Cougars.

The Lady Bulldogs took care of business tonight in the DAWG House by sweeping the Cy Creek Cougars (25-12, 25-15, and 25-16) in front of an appreciative crowd. The ladies put it all together, blending their power and passing with speed into a lethal combination that was too much for the Lady Cougars to handle.

Lady Bulldog Alicia Shaffer showing perfect form with one
of her passes. Alicia finished with 7 Digs for the evening.

In the first set Michele Williams single handedly took control of the match by blocking the first attack at 1-1; then slamming a thundering 'Boom Boom' kill to the floor the next play at 2-1; then quickly following it up a solo block from a Cougar backcourt kill attempt, at 3-1 before OH Jamie Kaleh joined in with a rocket of her own at 4-1. Michele put another patented blast in the Cougars' court at 5-3 that blew the DAWGS by the COOGS and on to a 20 to 9 tear... Magnolia truly played a 'complete' game with great passing, timely hitting with an extra bonus: devastating serving! Alicia Shaffer and Kelli Stewart's jump serving made life difficult for the COOGS and Kati Michael had 2 Aces midway through this set and kept Cy Creek on their back paws for the evening. There were not going to be any noticeable weaknesses in this one - just an impressive start -as the DAWGS ran away with a 25-12 victory in the friendly confines of their beloved DAWG House!

Lady Bulldog Breane Matula rifling one of her Kills by a frozen Lady Cougar.

Set 2 started with Alicia Shaffer lighting things up with a kill in the middle court at 2-1, then a pair of back-to-back Aces forging Magnolia ahead at 4-1 before a host of DAWGS tore into Cy Creek like fresh meat! Michele had a kill at 5-1, Kelli Stewart jammed a shot down tyhe line at 7-2; a couple of serving points for Kati Michael at 8-3 and 9-3; pre-empting the Hannah Fort 'show' which began with a tip at 10-4, a block at 12-4 and a pair of Kills later at 17-6 and 18-7. All that was left to do, was to have Alicia Shaffer kill one at 22-7 and for Coach J to open up the bench and get some young talent on the court. Alicia had another tip at 23-13, then an Ace at 24-13 and the DAWGS would basically coast into a 25-15 bantering victory, barking as they cleared the floor, preparing for the next set.

Lady Bulldog Kati Michael (15) with a quick set to

MB Hannah Fort (9) on a busy night for Magnolia.

It looked like the DAWGS were coming out firing, as there was not going to be any letting up in this third set as well. But, Cy Creek had different plans this time around. Kelli Stewart tied it up with a Kill at 1-1 and followed up with a Block at 2-1, but the dogs took an unexpected short nap and for the only time in the evening - the DAWGS awoke trailing Cy Creek until they quickly regained their form and caught the Coogs at 7-7. From there the DAWGS settled down and played defensive volleyball and forced the Lady Cougars into committing errors while making relatively few errors themselves while scoring 2 points to evry one they gave up, going forward. Meagan Little had a tipped ball at 11-9; Brittany Wheaton had a couple of service points at 13-11 and 14-11; Alicia Shaffer had a kill at 18-12 and a couple of Aces late at 22-13 and 23-13; and again with fresh faces and fresh legs - Magnolia cruised to a finish where the Lady Coogs fell on their own sword by serving out-of-bounds at 25-16. It was really an impressive evening for Magnolia against a very good Cy Creek team.

Brittany Wheaton serving up one her points as Lady

Bulldog DS Lynnsay Manning awaits the outcome.

Unofficially, Michele Williams had 10 kills, 2 Blocks and 1 Block Assist; Alicia Shaffer had 5 kills and 7 Digs with 4 Aces; Jamie Kaleh had 5 Kills, 7 Digs; Kelli Stewart had 3 Kills, 1 Block, and 2 Block Assists; Hannah Fort had 3 Kills, 2 Blocks and 2 Block Assists; Breann Matula had 2 Kills; Brittany Wheaton hauled in 16 Digs; Hannah Davies notched 13 Assists followed by Kati Michael who had 9 Assists to go with her 4 Aces.
