DAWGS Sweep Jersey Village for a Second Time

Senior DS Chelsea Rauscher was at the

right place at the right time for this dig!

The DAWGS put the Lady Falcons to rest in this one, folks!

There were a couple of anxious moments for the Lady Bulldog fans as the DAWGS had a temporary case and went "error-i-tous" on us and trailed the Lady Falcons for the first half of this one. Once Breane Matula hit one off the Lady Falcons' hands at 12-13, Kelli Stewart threw a block up for another point to tie it up at 13-13; and after the ensuing time out - Paige Holland scored one of her 4 kills, followed by sophomore team mate Courtney Felinski's block at 15-13 and you get the idea .... the gate was open and the Lady Falcons had scattered.

Courtney Felinski's block at 15-13 put the icing on the

cake, as the DAWGS forged ahead for the match win.

The audio picks up at 20-14. How sweet it was...

Kelli Stewart hitting through the

block for one of her 11 kills.

For the evening, seniors OH Kelli Stewart and MB Breane Matula led the way with 11 kills apiece, with Breane adding two serving aces. Speaking of aces, sophomore Paige Holland had a career evening with 4 aces, 4 kills, 1 block assist and 31 scoring assists; while team mate Katzy Randall also had 4 aces with 5 kills. Hannah Davies led with 9 digs.

The DAWGS will have a one day rest and be ready to play in the Pearland Tournament this Thursday. The schedule is posted on the blog.

DAWGS Begin to Pull Away From Jersey Village

The DAWGS flexed their legs a little near the end on that last one, but little did we know they were about to continue where they just left off and 'outrun-and-gun' the Lady Falcons in this second set.

The DAWGS were ready to
chew-'em-up in this second set.

The Lady Bulldogs ripped off big chunks of scoring at the beginning (7-1), middle (13-2) and the 3/4 mark (18-3) of the set before the Lady Falcons were ready to challenge Magnolia. It took every bit of focus the ladies could muster to stay involved in this comeback attempt for Jersey Village. Here the file picks up at 23-12:

MB Meagan Little shown here

winding up, ready to unleash a kill!

The DAWGS started it out with a quick 4 point lead at 5-1 thanks to a couple of nifty moves from MB Breane Matula and a couple of OH Kelli Stewart missles. The Lady Falcons regained their composure somewhat and pulled within one at 10-9, only to have the DAWGS start a patented feeding ..... errrrr..scoring frenzy and work up to a 5 point edge at 21-16 when this audio file picks the action up:

DAWGS Win Silver Championship at Spring Branch

2008 Spring Branch Tournament Silver Champions

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs played nearly flawless volleyball throughout their Spring Branch Tournament play and finished at the top with the Silver Championship. Noticably, the key word in the statement is "nearly". That's because it's almost impossible to play flawlessly, but teams must play without any weaknesses, doubts, and unbelievable skill to go all the way in tournaments where the teams are so evenly matched. Teams at this point in the season can be playing to the top of their abilities and that's about all anyone can ask for. The DAWGS did just that Saturday morning and afternoon. The ladies consistently played brilliantly all day long; as well as they've played at any time this season and the monkey was on their opponents' backs. Everything can be going right, and then one small insignificant event can occur, and the slight imbalance sends everything into chaos. It doesn't hurt to have Lady Luck smiling on you either.

The DAWGS were within a couple of points of advancing in the championship bracket last week- but the Pearland Lady Oilers resurrected themselves to win the second set by 2 points at 27-25 and went ahead of the shell shocked Lady Bulldogs to eventually win the match. Unfortunately, for Pearland, Katy and Clear Lake it takes flawless play on their behalf to go all the way, as well. Pearland played good enough to beat them but bowed before Cy Woods in the finals of the Championship. Both of these strong teams have slipped by Magnolia this season by a few points. The point is that there is not a lot of points separating most of these teams.

MB Breane Matula (5) and OH Sarah Bacho (7)
teamed up to block another St Agnes attack
and celebrated afterward!

The DAWGS had it all working and led in this final game from beginning to end and opened their lead to 10 points before mercifully making short work of this championship series. Kelli Stewart and Katzy Randall had 8 kills apiece, while Breane Matula contributed 4 kills. Hannah Davies had 9 digs and Paige Holland dished out 21 assists. This file starts at 21-12 with the DAWGS running away with this one...

GREAT JOB LADY BULLDOGS!!!

DAWGS Take First Step Toward Championship

The Lady Bulldogs made it to the Silver Championship match and now must take on an impressive looking St Agnes Lady Tigers team who has just taken care of Bryan in 3 close games, and always seems to play their best against the DAWGS. Magnolia has literally rolled into this match, looking like gunslingers wanting to take any and every one on.

Again the DAWGS started slowly trailing closely behind yet, never trailing by more than 3 points. The DAWGS sprayed kill shots around the floor as Kelli Stewart, Meagan Little, and Katzy Randall keep things close with timely kills and once the score was tied at 9-9: Breane Matula blocked a Lady Tiger attack at 10-9, a time out was immediately called and the rout was on! During the ensuing feeding frenzy, the Lady Bulldogs ripped off 15 points to St Agnes' 6 from that point on and won this opener, in stride and pulling away!

Katzy Randall declawed the Lady Tigers
with a great right arm of her own!

This file starts late in the set with the score at 22-14:

Lady Bulldogs Bar Katy's Door..

Okay, okay, so the title's really a stretch... (you try thinking of hundreds of cute, new titles with team's mascots) !

In reality... it's not that bad! This second do-or-die set was close from the beginning without either team holding more than a 2 point advantage until when Katy blocked a DAWG attack at 15-12 and they began having visions of winning this one and wearing the DAWGS down for a third set. The DAWGS were working hard for their earned points, then gave some easy ones back in the form of errors. The DAWGS stayed closely behind until they evened the score and the Katy Taylor coaching staff called a timeout when this audio file takes over at 19 to 19. The DAWGS are beginning a feeding frenzy...

The tandem of Breane Matula and Meagan Little had 7 kills apiece while Kelli Stewart led the way with 11 digs followed by Hannah Davies with 10. Paige Holland continued her productive afternoon with 21 assists in this match.

Things were going well....too well. It was time the wheels fell off! The Lady Bulldogs swept the Jersey Village Lady Falcons and were now facing their next foe: Katy Taylor who had just demolished Clements High School in front of everyone's eyes and looked BIG, BAD, and MEAN!

Lady Bulldogs' Paige Holland (L) and Breane Matula (R)
immediately went to work shutting Katy Taylor down.

After again starting this set slowly behind 0-3, the DAWG scoring machine immediately ramped up 6 straight points (Breane Matula hammered a couple kills, as did Kelli Stewart) shocking their taller opponent which began spiralling the DAWGS' western neighbors into a waterfall of errors. The Lady Bulldogs led by as much as 5 as late as 12-7 and held it together comfortably around 3 or 4 points until this audio file takes over at 21 to 17. The DAWGS are beginning to look a little hungry...

Lady Bobcats had MOJO Working on DAWGS

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs dropped 3 closely fought sets tonight to a disciplined Cy Fair Lady Bobcat team in a match that had the Bobcats continuing to bend but never break. The DAWGS meanwhile had their impressive moments as well, but fell victim to more inconsistent, error-prone moments that eventually took their toll. It just never came together and the credit is due to the Lady Bobcats who played better tonight as they clipped the DAWGS (25-23, 25-22, 25-23) by not allowing Magnolia to get into a 'sudden death' situation where the DAWGS could potentially turn their MOJO loose!

Sophomore Lady Bulldog Katzy Randall

had a busy evening digging Cy Fair hits.

Senior Lady Bulldog OH Kelli Stewart led the DAWGS with 17 kills and were all well earned, but OHR Meagan Little had the best hitting percentage of the night for the DAWGS as she hammered the ball between and around double-teamed defenders shifting back and forth between both of Magnolia's outside hitters.

The match record for Magnolia now stands at 7-6 and one can't help but believe all this tough competition against most of the elite teams in the state of Texas is actually helping the ladies play better with more consistency. After all, a player must perform at the highest level on every play, day-in-and-day-out, without letting up or dropping her guard down for a moment. We can only imagine, the younger players are absorbing a ton of invaluable experience about right now that will pay dividends later.

Even though the season is young, the Lady Bulldogs have already tackled some of the best 5A and 4A volleyball teams in the state from different regions and will likely see most of these teams late in the season marching towards the state playoffs. It's been said more than once, "It's not how you start that counts, it's how you finish!"

Senior OHR Lady Bulldog Meagan Little had the

best hitting percentage of the evening for the DAWGS!

The Lady Bulldogs have little to no rest, and will be taking on Jersey Village tomorrow morning (that's a Saturday morning, by the way) at 9:00 AM at Memorial HS, as they rejoin the festivities at the Spring Branch tournament.

GO LADY BULLDOGS!!!

DAWGS Lose a Heartbreaker

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs dropped a tough, hard fought match against the Pearland Lady Oilers (1-2) behind Kelli Stewart's 10 kills in their second round in the 2008 Spring Branch Volleyball Tournament.

Senior Libero Hannah Davies
committing to this dig all the way!

The DAWGS were in control in the first set (25-15) but fell short in the second set as the Pearland Lady Oilers staved off elimination, by coming out on top by 2 in their extra play (25-27) of the pivotal set. The Lady Oilers continued to ride the momentum of the win to a 25-21 finish in the third set to make their comeback complete. The Lady Oilers will take on Cinco Ranch in their quest for the Championship. The DAWGS on the other hand, will face Jersey Village early Saturday morning heading towards the Silver Championship.

Sophomore Lady Bulldog Courtney Felinski was right
where she needed to be to block the quick kill attempt.

The Lady Bulldogs will be facing the Cy Fair Lady Bobcats at the Dog House this Friday afternoon 5:30PM.

GO LADY BULLDOGS!!!

DAWGS Open Tournament Play With a Vengance

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs growled a little as they mauled the Lady Lobos from Lanham Creek in 2 straight sets (25-17 and 25-21) in their first match of the 2008 Spring Branch Tournament.

Kelli Stewart launched this WMD as
the Lady Lobos tried to put up a block.

The DAWGS were led by sophomore Katzy Randall's 9 kills and a tough, gritty, and cohesive defense that appears to be improving - and not a minute too soon....!! The competition in this year's double elimination tournament is very strong and to get a quick "W" in the winner's column, is the absolute best way to start! The DAWGS will face Pearland, next and will be a dogfight!

Senior Middle Blocker Breane Matula put the brakes on this one!

Cy Woods End DAWGS Home Win Streak

The Cy Woods Lady Wilcats came to the DAWG House and jumped on their hosts while systematically dismantling the DAWGS hitting machine in 4 sets (25-23, 26-24, 19-25, 25-22) in an emotion-packed match. In doing so, the 'Cats brought the Lady Bulldogs home win streak to a grinding halt at 25 matches, and showed the crowd that these ladies can play great defense as well as score from anywhere on the court, and are for real!

The DAWGS celebrated their short

lived 25-19 victory in their third Set.

The 'Cats are expected to be the last one standing in the District 15-5A finals at the end of the season and will be certainly vying for Regional honors and more. The 18-4A Magnolia Lady Bulldogs are taking a little different route while facing the top district contenders up and down the line, in both 5A and 4A districts (Duncanville Tournament of Champions) and will no doubt match up with some more of Texas' elite squads over the next couple of weeks - in tournament play (Spring Branch and Pearland). You can pretty much bank on the DAWGS will be in the hunt as well.

Lady Bulldogs Courtney Felinski and Meagan Little
teamed up to shut down the Lady Wilcats' attack.

While the DAWGS were not the better team tonight, there were some bright spots. After sweeping Cy Creek on the road last night, the DAWGS had a little momentum going their way and would be called upon while entertaining the 2nd ranked 5A team in the state. Senior Lady Bulldog Kelli Stewart had 17 kills, 7 digs, with 6 aces; Katzy Randall had 12 kills, 12 digs with 1 bock assist; Paige Holland had 40 assists with 13 digs, and 1 kill. Both teams overcame fairly significant leads in the 4 sets, with 'play-off like momentum swings, with as many as 8 points in the first set alone, to eventually pull close and slug it out at the end. It turned out that both teams were closely matched.

The Lady Bulldogs battled all the
way in this evenly contested match.

There's no rest for the weary as the Lady Bulldogs prepare to go to the Spring Branch Tournament, on Thursday, Aug 21st at 5 pm at Spring Woods and start working on some new streaks of their own!

The Lady Bulldogs have been busy grinding it out with tough opponents since their season opened and will be facing more as 'Tournament play' ramps up.

Lady Hawks Pick Lady Bulldogs Apart

The DAWGS gave it all they had and still

came up short in this match against Red Oak.

This one was all Red Oak as the new and improved 2008 Lady Hawks schooled the DAWGS 25-18 in this match with some nifty ball control, defensive footwork, and opportunistic hitting. It wasn't as close as the score appeared to be in the first set (18-25) as the DAWGS added some points in a late, comeback attempt in the 'eye opener' and the Lady Bulldogs are putting it all together in this spirited second set. The ladies are going to need to make it happen now, if they're planning to win the Consolation Bracket. We're in Set 2 of this one:

DAWGS Go After Amarillo Tascosa Lady Rebels

The Lady Bulldogs are taking on the other team from Amarillo: the Tascosa Lady Rebels in a match that will determine who will be in running for the Consolation Championship bracket. Out of the 36 top caliber teams in this prestigeous championship tournament, basically only one team will go undefeated and be crowned Duncanville Champions. The tournament is a good indicator at how good or far along the teams who've entered are and how they'll match up with quality foes through their season(s).

The Lady Rebel team from Tascosa may play in the shadow of their other 'well known, ultra, All Universe' neighbor (Amarillo Sandies), but remain a very good rival and succesful team in their own right. This is an aggressive, talented, classy team and fans - who also happen to have a good time on the court. They have an impressive program that may take their city back as they compete with each new top team they face.

The Tascosa Lady Rebels were unable to break through

the Courtney Felinski - Katzy Randall "Wall"...

This match was a good one to see where both programs are heading as two evenly matched teams face each other in an increasingly important match. The DAWGS seemed to be playing better as this one went along, despite leading the match from the beginning. They were only tied once at 10-10 and stretched their lead to 7 at 23-16 before finishing up in Set 1, 25-17. This file is a recap:

DAWGS Over Run Cougars in 4 Sets

Holy Frijole, Lady Bulldog Fans!!

2008 Magnolia HS Lady Bulldogs going UP !!

Your 2008 edition of the Magnolia High School Lady Bulldog Volleyball team is off to an exciting and even more, impressive start! While mixing a lethal combination of experience and youth, the DAWGS overcame a marathon session of a match over a talented, senior-laden, 'long-of-tooth' Tomball High School Lady Cougar team in 4 sets (3-1) with still-fresh legs pulling away in the finale. These are the very same Lady Cougars who are favored to win their district (and beyond) by most of the volleyball community. They very well may get there. These ladies are battle-tested, tall, very talented and oh yeah, 'across town' rivals! The opener started with a 32-30 nail-biter of a win, then followed with another sizzler 27-25 win, a 22-25 loss, and again, turned around with a solid 25-16 victory for the DAWGS who have preserved their home win streak (which is now 25 matches in a row!) Of course, the paramedics were relieved to not be working on behalf of their excited patients, as well!

The DAWGS were led by the high-flyin' senior OH Kelli Stewart who mauled the Lady Cougars for a game high 29 kills. Rumor has it that Kelli reportedly got a text message from her Coug buddies chiding and complimenting her after the match, saying "she'd beaten their team ... single-handily, all by herself!" Kind words and earned praised, indeed! Sounds like the tired Cougars may have had a little conditioning practice after their 4 set match....

Soph setter Paige Holland setting one of her 56 assists.

The message may have been accurate, but the Magnolia fans also saw a resourceful, focused, and determined, supporting cast with the likes of Soph Setter Paige Holland's 56 assists, 2 Kills, and 1 solo Block; Soph OH Katzy Randall's 12 Kills and 2 Assist Blocks; Sr MB Breane Matula's 11 Kills and 2 Assist Blocks; and a surging Sr MB/OH Meagan Little who had 9 Kills, 1 Solo and 2 Assist Blocks while practically controlling the final set; Libero Sr Hannah Davies who's great passing and 15 Digs jacked the team up and kept the ladies moving in the right direction. The DAWGS when clicking on all cylinders, looked very sharp and came at Tomball from everywhere up front and from the back row. The passing and defensive coverage was very effective and kept a very good Tomball team on their heels for the evening. The Lady Cougars probably have had better nights with their serve receiving, but the exchange of "Serve" and "Serve Receive" errors between the 2 teams was close to being even with maybe a slight advantage going to the DAWGS. The Cougs however, were also bludgeoned by Kelli Stewart's jump serve that yielded 4 Aces, Soph Courtney Felinski's 3 Aces, Paige Holland's 2 Aces, Katzy Randall's 2 Aces, and Meagan Little's 1 Ace and no doubt will be the subject matter for Cougar practices to come!

Senior LB Hannah Davies saved this

one of 15 for her team mates.

The first set had the DAWGS surprising their guests with 4 straight points behind Kelli 'BAM BAM' Stewart blasts, and had a seemingly solid lead at 10-4. The Cougs were having some problems with their serve receiving and found themselves in a hole at 18-8, before they made some adjustments and fought their way back into this game. What Tomball did was outscore Magnolia 10-4 and were in the hunt at 22-18. A few errors later, and the set was tied at 23-23 and it was crunch time. The next 4 tie breakers were held by Tomball, before Magnolia had their first tie breaker advantage at 28-27, brief as it was until Tomball had the upper hand at 29-28 with a great block at the net. A Tomball out-of-bounds tip followed at 29-29 and a setting error put Magnolia on top at 30-29. Breane Matula had a timely dink for the DAWGS advantage at 31-30, and a hit in the net sealed the deal for the DAWGS at 32-30. What a match. What an opening match!!

An impressive evening of 29 Kills for

unstoppable senior Kelli Stewart!

Set 2 was played closer to the vest with 16 tied scores with both teams flexing their muscles to see who was going to control the match going forward. The fans probably began to wonder whether the games between these 2 rivals should just start at 24-24 and play "sudden-death ball" and let the winner take all. It would probably take 4 hours, anyway! Set 2 was highlighted by Magnolia's great team effort. Along with another impressive Kelli Stewart performance, Meagan Little took control of the set near the end, along with Katzy Randall to push the DAWGS over the edge from 25-25 with timely kills of their own. DAWGS: 27 COUGARS: 25.

Coach J urging the team forward for the win!

Set 3 started out with a wounded Tomball team that jumped on the DAWGS with a 4 point edge at 4-8 only to lose it temporarily with tied scores at 8-8 and 9-9. But the Cougs regrouped and from that point, never relinquished the lead going forward in this one. The closest the DAWGS could come was 2 points at the end of the set 22-24. Tomball may have gotten that ol' sinking feeling again, even if it was for just a moment, but closed it out with a generous Magnolia serving error at 25-22. Put a win in the column for the team in RED.

Senior MB Breane Matula's scoring surge in the final set

closed the door for any Cougar thoughts of a comeback.

The final set was "ALL DAWG.. vintage "ALL DAWG"! Though it is not the normal protocol to lead the entire match without losing the momentum and the lead several times, the DAWGS did just that - much to the appreciation of the fans! I think everyone wanted this one to be over, and over soon! Again Kelli Stewart was relentless with another 10+ Kills in the set. Kelli mixed her shots up with crosscourt kills, kills down the line, through the double team defenders, over the top, etc ... you name it, she did it! Breane Matula had an outstanding set with a stretch of 5 points for the 'good guys' when the DAWGS began to assert themselves for good! Paige Holland's quick sets turned into quick Breane kills, which resulted in quick points at 13-11, 14-11, and 15-12. Breane's kill at 17-12 forced Tomball to try to break the momentum by calling for their final timeout, only to resume play and have Breane block the next Tomball attack for a lead of 6 at 18-12. The DAWGS never looked back and rattled of 7 points to Tomball's 4 to put this highly anticipated match behind them and the season off to a good start.

The Lady Bulldogs had a short moment

to savor the well deserved win!

The DAWGS will be travelling to Duncanville Wednesday morning for Thursday matches, and to try to improve on their 3rd Place finish last year and we wish the ladies the best!

"Good Luck DAWGS,

Bring Home the Gold!!"
