Lady Bulldogs Start District Play 1-0

The Lady Bulldogs 'rockin' the Dawg House with first
district win against the Jersey Village Lady Falcons

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs (1-0) started their quest for the District 17-5A Championship with an impressive display of weaponry and skill as they blew past the Jersey Village Lady Falcons in 3 straight games tonight in the Dawg House. With surgeon-like precision and energized fans, the Lady Bulldogs sliced and diced the low flying Lady Falcons right out of the sky with scores 25-10, 25-15, and 25-14. Michele Williams (13 Kills and 9 Digs) controlled the middle and scored seemingly whenever she wanted. Michele's now famous "Williams' Glide" worked to perfection as she swept to the right side and hammered the ball down to the floor. Kelli Stewart played well as did Hannah Fort and Alicia Shaffer (10 Digs). Lauren Michael got hot in the third game and finished the night as the leader for Magnolia with 16 Kills and 11 Digs. Lady Falcon Christina Gavenas had 6 kills, but were not effective enough to help the Falcons. The Lady Bulldogs stepped up their defensive play and made some incredible digs and passed the ball around like they were playing with a bone. Caitlin Holland (11 Assists) and Mary Chadwick (25 Assists) dished out great sets and passed the ball superbly and controlled the court as Coach J gave the supporting players playing time for some game 'experience' that may be needed in the future.
'Boom Boom' does it again. The 'Williams' Glide' that is...
Michele slides to the right side and blows a kill by two
Jersey Village defenders in the Lady Bulldogs (3-0) rout.

Each of the games started fast for the Lady Bulldogs and just got faster as they went on. The entire match lasted less than 50 minutes. Game#1 score was 12-6, then ballooned to 17-8, and 25-10 before the Lady Falcons could get airborne. Game #2 much the same: 11-4, then 18-7, and 25-15. Game #3 was similar but was closer at 10-7, then the Bulldogs stretched the lead to 19-11, before crushing Jersey Village with a 25-14 finish. Another total team victory goes into the books as a big "W" goes into the column where it counts - district win!

Congratulations!!! I just love your web page!! Great layout, excellent and interesting writing, great pictures, all bringing great news about the Lady Bulldogs!! And yes, volleyball is my favorite sport.I have subbed here in the MISD for three years, and I love coming to the high school. I am a long term sub for Elaine Butler (Spanish) and I'm so glad I was privy to this newsletter. I'd love to come support ya'll some Tuesday night. Perhaps I'm not reading the schedule correctly, but all I see are away games. When's the next home game? I'll be there! Bumping and digging,

JV Starts District Play With Big Win

These ladies are not auditioning for a Broadway show. The Lady Bulldogs
JV could probably play Broadway, but not as good as they play volleyball.
They are now 9-1 in Match play and 1-0 in District 17-5A play for the season.

The Lady Bulldogs JV started their 17-5A district match play (1-0) against the Jersey Village Lady Falcons tonight in the Dawg House in fine fashion as they clipped the Lady Falcons in 3 games (20-25, 25-13, and 25-10). Just one look at the scores and you can tell the ladies started a little flat-footed in Game #1, and really turned Jersey Village's world upside down in Game #2, and Game #3. I'm not sure if the Lady Bulldogs would've let Jersey Village get 5 points if there was a 4th game, as their defense was coming on strong and they were in an intimidating mood.
The Lady Bulldogs JV next district opponent will be the Langham Creek Lady Lobos JV played Friday night, Sept 2nd, 5:00 PM at Langham Creek High School. Directions to the school should be on the MHS website.

JV Drops Close Match for First Loss

Magnolia High School Junior Varsity MB Jamie Kaleh shown here flying above and pounding the Cinco Ranch Lady Cougars team with another kill.

The Lady Bulldogs JV fell prey to the Cinco Ranch Lady Cougars JV on Friday night in 3 games for their first Match loss of the season. The Lady Bulldog JV's blew Cinco Ranch out in the Game #1, then fell by almost the same margin in Game #2. Game #3 was a spirited, slugfest all the way with the Lady Bulldog JV's leading by as much as 6 points. Unfortunately, the momentum and a few unforced errors turned the tide and they could not ultimately hold on to the lead. Cinco Ranch began out-hitting and out-running the Bulldogs to win the tie-breaker by 2 points 15-13. The Lady Bulldog JV's have a busy week ahead of them, and will be playing in their district opener on 8/30 against Jersey Village at HOME (4:30) and will be facing Langham Creek AWAY on Friday, 9/2 before playing in the Conroe Tournament on Saturday 9/3.

GO LADY BULLDOGS !!

Lady Bulldogs Take Award at Tournament

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs are all smiles after a 4th Place finish at the 2005 SpringBranch Tournament. Pictured left-to-right Top row: Michele Williams, Kristyn Bergen, Heather Bowden, Samantha Lange, Hannah Fort, and Kelli Stewart. Bottom row: Alicia Shaffer, Caitlin Holland, Carly Springer, Ashley Meeks, Mary Chadwick, and Lauren Michael.

The 2005 Magnolia Lady Bulldogs fell short in the semi-finals against Katy Taylor on Saturday, August 28th at the Don Coleman Coliseum by the scores of 25-22 in both games, and then fell to the Cinco Ranch Lady Cougars in the consolation match to finish 4th in the 2005 Spring Branch ISD Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs and their fans should be very proud for MHS's highest ever finish at Spring Branch Tournament !!

It's almost scary to think how close the ladies came to winning and being in the finals against the Dulles Lady Vikings when looking back on these two close losses against the Katy Taylor Lady Mustangs. If we just could've got one or two more 'kills' here, a couple less 'errors' there, maybe throw in a little bit of good fortune, for good measure...well, hind-sight is 20/20!! We'll get 'em next time!!

The MHS Lady Bulldogs will be starting District 17-5A play and playing in the prestigious Pearland Tournament this week. Here is the (tentative) schedule for the varsity and JV for week of August 30th - Sept 3rd...

  • JV and 9A : HOME - vs Jersey Village Lady Falcons: 4:30 PM Tuesday, Aug 30th

Lady Bulldogs Knocking on the Door

Lady Bulldog Caitlin Holland jump
setting during Katy Taylor match.

When we enter the audio blog on this one, the Lady Bulldogs (11-2) are in Game #2 against the Katy Taylor Lady Mustangs (12-2) all knotted up at 20-20. The Lady Bulldogs needed to win this one and go into Game #3 and take that one too, if they want to get into the final match with the Dulles Lady Vikings - who by the way, ransacked the Cinco Ranch Lady Cougars in 3 exciting games, earlier today in their semi-final match. The Lady Bulldogs are evenly matched with the Lady Mustangs and are knocking on the door!

The loser of this match will drop to 3rd or 4th (depending on the outcome of the 3rd-4th Place match vs Cinco Ranch) to be played right after this one is decided. We would like to apologize for experiencing some 'technical difficulties' today, but ended up getting them ironed out...(okay, okay...I had to pay my phone bill !!)

Cinco Ranch Lady Cougars Skin the Lady Bulldogs

Cinco Ranch's starter MB Carrie Gurnell (23) signals team
mates during match against the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs.

The undefeated and confident (13-0) Cinco Ranch Lady Cougars came into the Dawg House with a #4 ranking in Texas 5A volleyball and probably wondered what all the talk was about with this 11-1 volleyball team from Magnolia. After all, Magnolia has been on their schedule for some time and the name has been getting around a little lately - and most recently: Magnolia and Cinco Ranch are 2 of the 4 teams left in the semi-finals for the Spring Branch Tournament to be settled on 8/27 . Cinco Ranch had just come off a lackluster victory (by their own standards) match (26-24 and 26-24) against FB Austin earlier this morning and maybe were questioning themselves a 'little-bit' about how they would perform against the unknown Lady Bulldogs. Maybe the Lady Cougars questioned whether they were over-confident and possibly would come out and play 'flat' or have 'let-downs', or maybe they questioned themselves if they even had enough stamina to possibly play 5 exhaustive games, etc....well, not to worry. Any doubts would quickly go away.

Kelli Stewart (18) and Michele Williams (23)
double up on Cinco Ranch MB senior Katie Sanders.

The Lady Cougars swept the Lady Bulldogs out of their own Dawg House in 3 games (25-9 ouch!, 26-24, and 25-20) and gave the Lady Bulldogs and their fans a glimpse of maybe what the future holds for them. The Lady Cougars' Katie Sanders had 15 kills and Alicia Shaffer had 12 kills and Lauren Michael chipped in 8 along with 14 Digs for the Lady Bulldogs.
It was obvious to all, that the level of experience was the over-riding factor in their decisive victories. There's just no substitute for 'experience'. This intangible resource cannot be coached, bought, given, or whatever. The key is simply: "repetition" - putting the 'time in', working the reps, doing fundamentals hundreds or thousands of times or until it becomes second-nature, playing in pressure situations, playing with your back against the wall, playing together for years, etc.

The Lady Cougars apparently had already been where the Lady Bulldogs are now and some parents were even overheard saying, "this is the year they've (Cinco Ranch) been working for." Friday night the Lady Bulldogs were no match for Cinco Ranch, but there's always tomorrow (literally). If the Lady Bulldogs are able to use this match, this experience, as a learning process, to use it and to grow as a team from this - then there shouldn't be any reason the Lady Bulldogs can't take 'em on the next one!

As soon as I get some stats, I'll pass them along...Sat 8/27 at 10:30 AM the Lady Bulldogs will be facing Katy Taylor at the Don Coleman Coliseum. The Ladies have already reached un-chartered waters for the program at Magnolia High School...I'm told no Magnolia volleyball team has ever gone this far at this tournament which showcases most of the top teams in the Houston area. This team is special and will continue to get even better...

GO LADY BULLDOGS !! BULLDOG PRIDE !! BULLDOG SPIRIT !!

Lady Bulldogs in the Fab Four!!

The Lady Bulldogs find it hard to contain their excitement
after beating Klein Oak and advancing to the semi-finals.
Holy frijole !! The Magnolia fans watching the Lady Bulldogs (11-1) take on perennial power Klein Oak at the Don Coleman Coliseum today were hoping the wake-up call was going to come earlier in the match, but when it did come much later - were all apreciative when Alicia Shaffer was the one who answered the call for the Lady Bulldogs! Alicia worked her magic with some key kills at just the right time and followed it up with some spectacular defensive plays (7 Digs) to keep the Lady Bulldogs surging ahead and finally put the Klein Oak Lady Panthers to sleep. Permanent sleep!

Up until that point both teams were locked up in a real old-fashioned dogfight and were truly slugging it out. Neither team could jump ahead by more than 3 points when the other would battle back to tie it up and even go ahead. This match had it all - unforced errors, backrow kills, timely momentum-stopping blocks, good coaching, come from behind drama - you know that kind of things that drive your blood pressure way up! Lauren Michael had a good game killing from the left side with 13 kills and also made some great defensive digs (8) and passes, while Michele 'Boom-Boom' Williams had 8 Kills and made 2 timely blocks - and of course, "the shot heard around the world" to end it once and for all. Following Michele and Lauren was Hannah Fort and Alicia Shaffer with 6 Kills apiece. Another inspirational team win (25-21)...

There are now 4 teams remaining for the semi-finals Saturday morning 10:30 AM with the finals after the semi's are over.
The teams are:
Cinco Ranch
Dulles
Magnolia
Katy Taylor

Here's Game #3:

Lady Bulldogs Refuse to Eat Cat Meat

Magnolia Lady Bulldog Lauren Michael getting around
Klein Oak defenders with one of her 13 kills.

This was an exciting game where Klein Oak again came back from the dead for the second consecutive time (first: last night against Cy Falls coming back 18-24 to win 26-24, and then again today down 18-21 to win 29-27). It may have cost them dearly though. The Lady Bulldogs were wounded and agitated after letting this one get away. From this game forward the Lady Bulldogs would make a stand... As it turned out, the Lady Panthers were running out of lives anyway and the Lady Bulldogs were just getting warmed up.
Here's Game #1:

Northbrook Raiders go down Quietly

Lady Bulldogs' Krystan Bergen zero's in and blows one
by, on this attack against Northbrook's Chaz Decera (9).

Mercifully, the Lady Bulldogs put this one away (25-17) and buried the bones of the Raiders in Game #2 and have earned themselves the right to go on to Round 3 vs the Klein Oak Lady Panthers to be played at the DCC (Don Coleman Coliseum) on Friday at 12:00 PM. Hannah Fort had 11 Kills to lead the Lady Bulldogs while Michele 'Boom-Boom' Williams and Lauren Michael quietly added 5 Kills apiece against the Lady Raiders as MHS played as many players as they could in the two game-rout. Mary Chadwick had 9 Assist Sets while Caitlin Holland had 8 Sets and 3 Serve Aces to go along with this tasty 'morsel' of a victory! Way to Go, Caitlin!!
Libero Ashley Meeks showing perfect form while passing to setter Mary Chadwick.
The Lady Bulldog's record now stands at (10-1) in Matches and (25-3) in Games. The ladies are going to have to turn on the juice for this one, as Klein Oak is led by 6' OH Bridgette LaPlante (All World player, etc) and still have enough to take on on Cinco Ranch (12-0) with 6'1"MB Carrie Gurnell (another All World player, etc), later in the afternoon (6 PM) at the Dawg House. This could be a great weekend of recognition for the Lady Bulldogs !!

Carly Springer (11) watching closely as Caitlin
Holland backsets for another Bulldog attack.

The Lady Bulldogs cruised past the Northbrook Lady Ragin' Raiders by a score of 25-10 in a mis-match during the second round of the Spring Branch Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs completed their 9th sweep of the season in 2 unrelenting games. Actually, they were due for one of those types of matches where everyone could play relaxed and have a lot of fun and really enjoy a total team victory. They just couldn't expect it to be in the second round of a tournament against an opponent who had just won their opener as well!! But the ladies made it happen and in impressive fashion.
Lady Bulldogs (left-to-right) Michele Williams, Samantha Lange,
and Lauren Michael talk "shop" while awaiting Bulldog serve.
After the Lady Bulldogs started their play with a couple of receive errors, Lauren Michael opened the 'feeding frenzy' with three kills and the Raiders quickly knew they was no way of getting out of this dogfight (at least, ALIVE!!). The Lady Bulldogs did everything right from then on, including bringing in Samantha Lange, Ashley Meeks, Carly Springer and Kristyn Bergen to stretch the lead and give the others a well deserved rest! Hannah Fort had a field day controlling the middle offensively and defensively and ended the match with 11 Kills. Coach J substituted freely, wisely and strategically and the result was a great time was had by all.

Lady Rangers Put in Hibernation by Lady Bulldogs

The Lady Buddog's Heather Bowden winning the battle up front against
Clemments' MB Becky Belt as Hannah Fort lends a helping hand.

The Lady Bulldogs put the Rangers to bed with a 25-16 win in Game #2 after controlling the tempo from the beginning and 'ball-hawking' defense. There was no letting up as the Lady Bulldogs poured it on them and have now improved their Match play record to 9 wins and 1 loss and their Games record now stands at 23 wins with just 3 losses. The Lady Bulldogs buried the Lady Rangers in Game #1 with a 25-22 smothering. 'Boom Boom' Williams led the way with 9 Kills in the match as the Magnolia hitters laid into them from every angle. Lauren Michael was right behind with 7 Kills and 7 Digs. Alicia Shaffer finished the match with 8 Digs and Mary Chadwick had another double-digit night of Assist Sets: 16...Swweeeettt !!
(The impressive part of the Lady Bulldogs' successes has been that these teams are not EASY opponents, folks!!)

Here's audio jumping into Game #2:

Lady Bulldogs Jump on Lady Rangers

Kelli Stewart and Hannah Fort showing intense
form while rejecting another Clements' attempt.

The Lady Bulldogs arrived at Northbrook High School this afternoon ready to play volleyball and wasted no time in shutting down the Clements Lady Rangers in Game #1 by a score of 25-22. Magnolia took advantage of their power by stroking the ball when they had it and blocking the ones when they were coming at them and once they ironed out their defensive strategy, the Lady Bulldogs handled the 11th ranked team in the state like a 'walk in the park'. Michele (Boom Boom) Williams planted 9 of her patented, explosive kills at the feet of the Lady Rangers rendering them helpless and shaking in their boots. (Ok, maybe their sneakers !!) Kelli Stewart, Hannah Fort and Heather Bowden all played their usual great game at the net relegating Clements to 3-balling almost every play -- just like the Lady Bulldogs like to be fed! Mary Chadwick and Caitlin Holland continued to run the offense like a well oiled machine and played well defensively. When the attacking duo of Lauren Michael and Alicia Shaffer were added to the mix the result was an over-powering, lethal, Bulldog cocktail that went down easy with deadly results.

Lady Bulldogs JV Wins Bryan Tournament Championship

The Lady Bulldog JV squad holding up their First Place plaque
after coming back in both of the semi-final and final matches.

Wow, the Lady Bulldogs JV played some awesome volleyball to come back from a loss in Game #1 and to maul the Oak Ridge Lady War Eagles JV in Games #2 and #3. Here's a little bit of the excitement as the ladies lay claim to the Bryan Tournament Championship...

Lady Bulldogs JV Hammer Oak Ridge in Game #2

The Lady Bulldogs JV went after Oak Ridge after a slow start in Game #1 to jump to an early lead in Game #2 and carry their momentum forward to bury Oak Ridge JV once and for all...

Lady Bulldogs JV Going into the Finals !!

The Lady Bulldogs JV had some obstacles in their path on their way to the finals of the Bryan Tournament - namely, Conroe (who they manhandled 25-18 and 25-15) and their old nemesis : A & M Consolidated. Here's a little summary of those matches:

Lady Bulldogs Comfortable in 'Dawg House"

Michele Williams unleashes another missle while 'swinging over' on
the right side of the net during the Lady Bulldogs win over Klein
Forest. Michele finished the night with 10 Kills.

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs came back to the friendly confines of the 'Dawg House' Friday night to put on a show for the hometown fans by ripping into the Klein Forest Lady Golden Eagles in 3 straight games (25-9, 25-16, and 25-16) for their 6th sweep of the young season. The fans were treated to a display of domination from the beginning and were very appreciative. The Lady Bulldogs (7-1 matches, 18-3 games) were led by All-District middle Michele Williams who put 10 kills on the floor - almost all were slammers with perfect, downward trajectories that might have left imprints on the floor. Michele controlled the middle with ease and even had a moment to catch up on some well deserved 'rest' (after practicing and playing 12 games in 4 days) by sitting out and cheering on Kelli Stewart almost the whole Game #2. Hannah Fort, Heather Bowden and Kelli Stewart both controlled the net in supporting roles and provided too much firepower for the falling Lady Eagles and also earned several T-shirts for some lucky fans with their block points.

In earlier action, the Lady Bulldogs JV team continued their undefeated ways by pounding the Lady Eagles JV in 2 straight to raise their record to (4-0) in matches and (8-0) in games. It's beginning to look like Magnolia has a volleyball "farming system" that will continue to put talented, tall ladies in future line-ups for years to come and envied by many schools, NOW!!
The JV will be on the road on Saturday traveling to Bryan, TX for the Bryan Tournament.

Next up for the Lady Bulldogs: 8/23 Tues 6:00 PM vs Oak Ridge at HOME *
8/25 Thurs Spring Branch Tournament AWAY
8/26 Fri 6:00 PM vs Cinco Ranch at HOME *

*Come early for the HOME games. The ladies have been starting their games a little early, as the JV team seems to be sweeping every match leaving too much time between the JV and Varsity games. Besides, you can get a good seat before they are all taken!! The ladies need your support as these high powered teams will bring their fans into the Dawg House and will be cheering them on.
Let's Get Ready to Rumble!!...........Go Lady Bulldogs !!

Lady Bulldogs Bite Bigger than their Bark !!

I just heard from my roving reporter and partner (Rusty "Kibbles") that the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs swept their district rival Tomball Lady Cougars by scores of 25-21 and 26-24 at the Katy Tournament this Friday 8/19. The Lady Bulldogs then faced the Kempner Lady Cougars and handled them 25-21 and 25-19 to complete the sweep of both (best-of-three) matches. Way to go, Ladies!!

The Silver Championship apparently will be split with Magnolia and the CyFair Lady Bobcats or will have to be decided in a couple of weeks when the Lady Bobcats and the Lady Bulldogs tangle in their district openers. The Katy Tournament scheduled times were running over an hour late and the window of 'travel' time back to their respective campuses was becoming critically narrow- so the coaches decided to settle this later;..."Texas Style".

The Lady Bulldogs record now stands at: Matches (6-1) and Games (15-3). They must be very tired with the traveling and game times - and they still have an 6:00 PM tip-off with Klein Forest scheduled tonite...and to play so strong - what a great effort!!
Win, lose, or draw....we're proud of the ladies for representing Magnolia in such a positive way.

Go Get 'Em Lady Bulldogs !!

Lady Bulldogs Fall Prey to Katy Tigers

The Lady Bulldogs gave it a heroic effort, but came up short in Game #2 after hanging tough all the way. Great action, but the Katy Tigers clawed the Lady Bulldogs 25-19.

Katy Tigers Set the Tone for Match #2 with 25-19 Win

The Katy Lady Tigers pounced on the Lady Bulldogs in Game #1 and had control of the game until the Lady Bulldogs made a run at them with a determined effort. There was no quitting in the "Dogs" in this game and they came back to scare the Lady Tigers and carry the momentum into Game #2.

Lady Bulldogs Take Humble Down in Two !!

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs put The Humble Lady Wildcats in their cage with an impressive win in Game #2 with a final score of 25-12. The Lady Bulldog front line really took control on both sides of the net and forced the Lady Wildcats into committing numerous errors. Humble 'shot themselves' several times in the paws giving up easy points as they could not serve-receive efficiently and get their game transitioned.

Lady Bulldogs Open Katy Tournament with Big Win

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs hit the ground running (and gunning) with a great start to overpower the Humble Lady Wildcats in Game #1. The Lady Bulldogs came at them from every angle while shutting down Humble's outside attack. Once again, Alicia Shaffer had the Wildcats on their back paws confused, and unable to return many of her serves. Magnolia jumped to a big lead, then slowed down somewhat - to take control of the lead at the end and to blow by 25-18.

Lady Bulldogs Improve to 3-0 in Matches and 9-1 in Games

The Lady Bulldogs had a special guest watching them play in Huntsville -- his name is Jason Allen, the assistant volleyball coach for Sam Houston State University. Coach Allen is in his second season as the Bearkats’ assistant coach, helping lead the team to its first Southland Conference post season tournament appearance since 1996 in his first year at SHSU.
Coach Allen had some kind words about the Lady Bulldogs, the match, and how the Lady Bearkats are looking as their season is getting close to kicking off -- in this interview...

Lady Bulldogs 2-0 in Opening Week

The 2005 Magnolia Lady Bulldogs rolled over their opponents this week with a couple of impressive match wins over the Bryan Lady Vikings on Tuesday, August 9th and the Klein Collins Lady Tigers on Friday, August 12th. The ladies now stand (2-0) for the season in match play and (6-1) in their games and continue to thrill the crowd with some spectacular volleyball action.

The Lady Bulldogs started the match out slowly but rallied at the end of game 1 to overtake Klein Collins 25-23, then clawed their way to a 25-19 victory in game 2 before finishing the (best 3 out of 5) match with a 25-14 win 'going away'. Michele Williams and Lauren Michael each added 11 kills and 6 Digs apiece to lead the good guys and Laura Prinsen tallied 13 kills for the Lady Tigers. Again there was strong net play from Hannah Fort (7 kills, one solo block), Kelli Stewart (2 block assists), Heather Bowden (2 Kills, 2 Digs), and Alicia Shaffer (6 kills and 14 Digs) who also had a spectacular game of serving. Alicia rattled off a string of serves at the beginning of Game #3 that had the Lady Tigers on their back paws, forcing them into seven service-receive errors from which they could not recover. Mary Chadwick (21 assist sets) and Caitlin Holland (9 assist sets) continued doing a good job of dishing out the sets to keep the Lady Bulldogs fed and in command throughout the match.

Next up will be the Lady Bulldogs traveling to Huntsville, TX on Tuesday August 16th for a 6:00 PM start against the Lady Hornets (3-0) and then returning to the Dawg House on Friday, August 19th at 6:00 PM to take on the Klein Forest Golden Eagles (0-2).
