DAWGS Turn on 'After-Burners'......
The Lady Bulldogs finished off their first round bi-district playoff foe mercifully in set #3 with a consistent and brutal offensive display until the Klein Collins Lady Tigers began to split at the seams. The DAWGS rattled up the points and stats starting with Michele Williams blocking an attack at 1-0, then a beautiful Glide kill shot to the right at 4-1, another block point at 5-1; and then a heat sinking missle at 7-2 that directed the ladies onto a run that would take them to 14-2.
Michele led the hitters with 18 kills along with a solo block and 5 block assists; followed by OH Alicia Shaffer who's "bat-power" lifted her to 7 kills, 1 block assist and a team leading 9 digs. OH Kristyn Bergen and DS Anna Barren each had 8 digs, with Kelli Stewart following closely behind with 7 digs to go with her 5 kills and 2 block assists. Wow, what a busy and productive evening for Kelli! Setter Caitlin Holland dished out 21 assists in another golden performance while Hannah Davies chipped in a solid 14 assists with 5 digs. Ashlynn Newman had a good evening at the net with 3 block assists and Hannah Fort gave another solid performance this evening with 2 kills and a block assist. This audio file picks up with the DAWGS chokin' the Tigers on their dust.....at 18-7:
DAWGS Win Pivotal Set #2 Against Lady Tigers
The Klein Collins Lady Tigers made the match interesting with a great effort against Magnolia, but seemed to run out of ammunition late in the set. Klein played the DAWGS close despite the hammering that was going on by Michele Williams and Hannah Fort and Kristyn Bergen who finished the evening with 6 kills. Kristyn's shot off the Tigers' paws at 7-6 seemed to be the divider between the teams and the Lady Bulldogs maintained a small edge going forward.
The Lady Tigers did not back down and gave it a great effort, but couldn't seem to pull even with Magnolia. There were some slick moves in this one with a left handed dink kill by Alicia Shaffer, a rifle shot down the right line by Kelli Stewart, a soaring Hannah Hustle Fort Glide shot on the right, and even a 'classic bait-and-switch' dink by Michele Williams in the middle, completely befuddling the younger Tigers. Michele had been slamming 'em all evening enroute to her 18 kills, but this time she drew the blockers up for the block attempt, only to tip it over their hands for an easy point. We had some technical issues to deal with, but we got the end of this set with this file at: 24-21. DAWGS on the prowl...
DAWGS Skin Lady Tigers in Playoff Debut
The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs waisted very little time tonight as they ripped into the Klein Collins' Lady Tigers in the first set behind a powerful attack, good digging and passing, and a bunch of unreturnable serves - all of the things that got Magnolia to where they were tonight. The Lady Dogs opened up to a 4 point lead behind an assortment of plays starting with MB Michele Williams opening Magnolia's scoring with her patented Glide shot, then following it up with a couple of blocks; an OHR Ashlynn Newman hit off the defenders' hands; and a "classic" 4 point' assortment of Alicia Shaffer's "Favorite Hits" as she attacked the net for her first point at 4-2, then a great kill down the left line at 7-4, then (one of my personal favorites) .... the kill coming up in the middle (though this bullet came from the back row) at 8-6, and then topping it off with a jump serve ace at 9-6. All that was needed for a "cherry on the top" was a 'Happy Birthday' combo kill at 10-6 from MB Hannah Fort and OHR Kelli Stewart that was the result of an overpass from the Lady Tigers' back row who unsuccessfully tried to return Alicia's serve. But, the DAWGS still weren't done. Not even close... MB Hannah Fort's block at 11-6 and a pair of Alicia Shaffer ace serves had the Lady Tigers snared at 13-6. A OHR Kelli Stewart dink and another Michele 'Boom Boom' Williams Glide later had the DAWGS mauling Klein Collins at 19-9 when this audio file picked up the action:

DAWGS Raise the Bar, Corral Lady Mustangs
The Magnolia Lady Bulldog volleyball team got just what they needed on Friday night at the Dawg House - another quality playoff opponent to battle as they prepare for the 5A single elimination playoffs starting on Monday night at Klein Collins. It was business as usual for the Ladies but this was no ordinary opponent on the opposite side of the net. The Memorial Lady Mustangs are one of the top teams in the Houston area AND they knocked the Bulldogs out of the playoffs in the first round last season. They also beat them at the Spring Branch tournament earlier this year.
Lady Bulldog MB Michele Williams splitting two Lady Mustangs with a kill.
Super Soph Kelli Stewart discouraged any Lady
Mustang attacks, forcing them to hit higher.
Game 2 was a test of the Ladies will to win and ability to remain composed under extreme pressure. Each team traded out serves mixed in with timely kills early on as they battled fiercely to an 8-8 standoff. A mixture of quality sets by Holland and Davies and kills by Williams, Shaffer, Bergen, and Fort had the Lady Bulldogs holding on to a 10-9 advantage. Memorial continued to pound the Dawgs with their experienced and talented front line to take an 18-14 advantage before yet another patented and familiar comeback by our cardiac kids. Alicia Shaffer was on the serving end yet again as the Dawgs clawed their way back into contention with a combo block by Bergen and Stewart and a Fort middle set kill knotted the contest at 18-18. An errant serve by Shaffer started the down slide of unforced errors for our Bulldogs as the Lady Mustangs built up a formidable 24-21 lead trying to close out game 2 and even the match. However, Michele Williams would have none of that in OUR Dawg House as she crushed an over pass and slammed down a perfect set by Holland to keep Magnolia alive at 24-23. A pressure packed dig by Bergen and an ensuing howitzer by Shaffer tied the game up at 24-24. Williams slammed another one home to keep the Ladies in the hunt before Shaffer ended the critical middle game of this match with 3 straight kills to close this one out at 28-26. Senior Anna Barren was instrumental with her back row digs and passing to help the Ladies to victory.
Game 3 started out similar to game 1 with Williams taking control on her rotation in front row and blasting away at will to give the Bulldogs an early 3-0 lead. However, Memorial showed the Lady Bulldog fans why they will be a force to be reckoned with in Region 3 of the state playoff bracket as they controlled the net with powerful attack points mixed in with a few blocks to take a 7-5 lead. Fort started the comeback with a couple of combo blocks with sophomore OH Ashley Newman and after 5 consecutive "rat-a-tat-tat" Alicia Shaffer kills the Dawgs were on top 13-9. Bergen and Williams followed suit with several attack points of their own and after both combined for a block point the Ladies were up 17-11. A resourceful and unexpected back row attack point by talented sophomore Hannah Davies and the Dawgs were well in control at 21-13. A strategically placed kill by Newman and a finishing combo block by sophomore Stewart and Fort and the Lady Bulldogs were winners again. This time by the score of 25-19.
One at a time.....starting Monday night at Klein Collins High School. Game time is 7:00 PM.

DAWGS Bring Home District Championship !!!
The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs defeated The Woodlands in the show down for the District 15-5A championhip at a packed and appreciative DAWG House on Tuesday night in a thrilling sweep by the final scores of 25-23, 25-14, and 25-23. The Bulldogs were hitting on all cylinders in game 2 but games 1 and 3 were played like championship matches were meant to be. Lady Bulldog OH Kristyn Bergen was a key contributor tonight as she delivered time and again at crunch time with the game on the line - both offensively and defensively (9 kills and 17 digs). OH Alicia Shaffer matched Bergen's outstanding effort with some timely digs and kills (9 kills and 16 digs), amped up jump serves, and superb crisp passing all night long. It was the best combined effort by the duo yet this season. Teams planning to sit on our outstanding middle attackers may have to re-think their game plan as the playoffs near!
Junior MB Michele Williams who just verbally committed to LSU this past weekend, had another outstanding effort on the front line with 16 kills and 6 blocks. Junior MB Hannah Fort (9 kills and 6 blocks) and super-soph OHR Kelli Stewart were equally as effective with their defense on the front line. It was Stewart's best effort this season on front row and it couldn't have come at a better time with the district championship outcome in the balance seemingly throughout the evening.
Senior setter Catlin Holland had another consistent and steady match on Senior Night with 23 assists to help put an exclamation point on what has been an outstanding and rewarding season for both her and the team. Sophomore setter Hannah Davies helped keep the offense going as well with 18 assists to her credit. Jamie Kaleh (OH) and Anna Barren (DS) were the only other contibutors to the Magnolia line-up on a night where everything was on the line.
GREAT JOB LADIES!!! DISTRICT CHAMPS!!

JV Undefeated District Champs !!
The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs JV are District 15-5A Champions
The Lady Bulldog JV finished the district season undefeated, and as District 15-5A Champs by taking care of their business 'at hand' Tuesday night by running down and sweeping the Lady Highlanders from The Woodlands in 2 exciting sets ending at 25-22 and 25-18. It wasn't easy, no one said it would be, and the Bullpups had to perform some of their best work when the game was on the line.
The PUPS have been at the top of the JV 15-5A District standings all season long and worked hard to get there. Not only did the ladies work hard during the summer and play volleyball in summer league competition; then practice in the July and August heat; scrimmage and open the season with a sweep over Dulles; then win the championship at the Bryan Tournament in impressive fashion; but they managed to be perched at the top of a new district for Magnolia - all season and all the time undefeated!! Awesome job ladies!!
The Lady Bulldogs JV in a two-pronged attack with Breann
The ladies didn't reach that plateau with luck....not hardly! They got there playing great volleyball with synchronized digs and passing; high attack percentages; serves that kept their opponents on their heels; a great defensive effort and cohesive teamwork that kept the ball moving around and back at their opponents. Of course, it didn't hurt when the Bullpups controlled the front line with just about every opponent they faced and at times "served 'em to death" and sweeping their opponents off their own home courts! I don't know about you folks, but I love a team with a "killer instinct"... and I especially love them even more, when it's OUR team!!
The PUPS had to pool from all of their resources and experienced from this season, in the first set, if they wanted to remain undefeated, as The Woodlands JV had their own plans with nothing but UPSET in their minds when they took the floor at the DAWG House. The Lady Highlanders came after the DAWGS from the beginning taking an early lead. After being down in game one at 15-20, the Bullpups fought back like the champions they knew they were, by promptly outscoring the Lady Highlanders 10 to 2, at crunch time, and defeated The Woodlands 25-22 in the first set. That comeback doused the fire in The Woodlands hearts and heads for this evening and no doubt gave them a dose of indigestion, to boot!
The Bullpups used the momentum and MoJo they had worked up previously to scamper by the Lady Highlanders behind an offensive barrage of attacks from Magnolia and some pretty nifty serving from Jamie Paulson and Angela Yzaguirre who were always close to the ace leaders in the JV district stats all season. The Lady Dogs won it going away at 25-18. What a great finish to the year for the JV, who fought back in game one before ruling The Woodlands in game 2 to win! 10-0!

Hear Michele Williams Roar......!!
Holy Frijole, Lady Bulldogs Fans!!......
The answer everyone has been waiting for, was just revealed Saturday, on her website:
http://www.michele.myvbprofile.com/
Of course, the question was, "Who was going to be the "choice" university and volleyball program that our very own Magnolia Lady Bulldog Michele Williams was going to choose to follow up her education with?"
Well, the answer has finally arrived......(drum roll, please).... This weekend Michele has verbally committed to attending the Louisiana State University, in Baton Rouge as a future student-athlete and specifically, as a 2008 member of the Lady Tigers volleyball team!
Wow, how exciting!!
We don't have to tell the Lady Tigers how proud we all are that Coach Flory is getting one of the best players in the country who's work ethic and talents are as equally impressive as her skills! What a great fit for both Michele and LSU. With LSU's success in the SEC and national ranking - you just know Michele will be a great addition and instant contributor to LSU's program as they keep going "up and to the right"....and to top it off - Michele'll be just a few hours away from home (just far enough for a laundry run every two weeks)!
Please congratulate Michele Williams with her commitment and wish Michele and family... the "Best of Luck" for their future!

JV Clinches District Title
In set #1, the Bullpups led 8-2 before the Lady Panthers knew what was happening behind a couple of service aces from Jamie Paulson and a Brittany Wheaton kill and Meagan Little dink - then opened up the margin with some help from Chelsea Jackson and a Breann Matula dink, then 3 serving aces from Angela Yzaguirre putting our PUPS in an 12 point lead at 20-8. After a couple of errors the Lady Bulldogs' OH Jamie Paulson rallied a couple of points from a kill shot off the defenders' hands and an ace at 22-11, then played stingy defense, causing Lufkin to error until Meagan Little put the Panthers to sleep at 25-13 with a booming 'Happy Birthday' bombshell of a hit. Set #1...in the books and the PUPS are half way there!!
The second set was very similar to the first set - only more dominance from Magnolia! This time, Jamie Paulson started the set out with 3 serving aces putting the DAWGS in control at 4-1; then an assortment of points from Brittany Wheaton (kills at 6-3 and a couple of aces at 11-4 and 12-4); a couple of Meagan Little kills; and 2 Breann Matula kills (at 16-8 and 17-8) before Angela Yzaguirre had back-to-back serving aces to again have the PUPS in the lead at 20-8. Wow,....this is very deja vu-ish!! The PUPS put 4 more earned points on the Lady Panthers (Breann Matula kill, Brittany Wheaton shot off their hands, another Jamie Paulson ace, and a final point from a Michelle Larson dink at 25-9.
DAWGS Finish Off Lady Panthers
DAWGS.....Git-er-Dun!!
It wasn't pretty, and it doesn't have to be...but again, Magnolia recouped their momentum and turned away the Lady Panthers to close out the 2nd set at 25-21. Magnolia had a 6 point spread near the end of the set and the Lady Panthers crept up on the sluggish, error-prone Lady Bulldogs who were getting 'semi-comatose' and falling asleep and tried to pull the upset.
Lady Bulldogs Take First Step in District Win
The Lady Bulldogs took the lead from the beginning and held it throughout the set. The DAWGS were having their way with the Lady Panthers at 9-2 behind their power and versatility at the net, stingy defense, and strategic passing when Kelli Stewart and Hannah Fort set the tone for the evening by stuffing Ms. Foster at 14-5. Everyone in the gymnasium "knew it" at that point going forward, that the Lady Bulldogs meant business. This audio file picks up at 17-7...DAWGS in front!

DAWGS Shoot Lady War Eagles Down in Flames
Lady Bulldogs Michele Williams and Jamie Kaleh teaming
After a slow start this evening, the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs ripped into the Oak Ridge Lady War Eagles' nest and came away with a 3-1 victory in their best 3 of 5 match by the score of 22-25, 25-13, 25-18, and 25-14. The Lady Bulldogs are now 27-7 overall and 8-0 in District 15-5A play and have won 13 matches in a row. The loss in set #1 ended the sweep streak (3 straight victories in a row) at 6 (or the equivalent of 18 sets in a row), but if you asked anybody they would tell you - "It's the win we want... not how we won it!"
The Lady Bulldogs fielded an unusal, vulnerable lineup in the first set and were immediately under fire after having an uncharacteristically slow start with an unusually high-count of unforced errors quickly mounting up. The DAWGS trailed Oak Ridge until they pulled up even and tied the game at 10-10, but quickly fell back and trailed in the middle of the set until Magnolia took the lead at 20-19 when OH Jamie Kaleh pushed a shot to the left corner of the court. MB Hannah Fort kept the DAWGS in the hunt with 4 kills, but Magnolia was waivering during this set. Michele 'Boom Boom' Williams put a missle down, exploding on the floor to tie the game up at 21-21 and the DAWG House started barkin', sensing victory was near!! Oak Ridge re-grouped however, scoring 3 straight points on DAWG errors until Ashlynn Newman blasted a kill down at 22-24 and it looked like Magnolia was going to do it again. Unfortunately, the magic disappeared and another error later....the Lady War Eagles had perhaps their biggest moment of the year winning their first set from Magnolia at 25-22 - and putting the DAWGS on the run....
Coach J and K (and Coach Bialas) did a great job of
putting the machinery back in place against Oak Ridge!
The revitalized DAWGS came back in Set #2 with a vengenance and a line-up change. Lady Bulldog MB Hannah Fort took matters into her own hands and lit Oak Ridge up with her Hannah 'Hustle' Glide kills throughout the match taking control when the DAWGS needed it the most. Magnolia jumped out with a small lead early, then fell back, briefly at 3-4 and once OH Alicia Shaffer, OH Jamie Kaleh, and OHR Kelli Stewart got in the mix, the Magnolia Steamroller was off and running forward with a 3 point lead at 11-8; a 4 point lead at 14-10; a 7 point lead behind 2 Hannah Davies' unreturnable serves; then out to a 10 point stretch behind Michele Williams' rocket-blast inside the 10' line at 20-10; and then again, at 23-13........ and the Lady War Eagles heads were spinning like a "seasick Linda Blair doll" while wondering what just happened to their mothership! "You just woke up a pack of sleepin' Bulldogs.......what do ya' think just happened?"...... 25-13.
Lady Bulldogs Kelli Stewart (L) and Michele Williams (R)
forcing Lady War Eagle attacker to go inside with her hit.
In the 3rd set, the Lady Bulldogs played a little more steady than the second set; cutting down on the errors and again utilizing their strength in the middle position. MB Hannah Fort and MB Michele Williams continued their dominance with blocks and kills with a little help from their friends OHL Jamie Kaleh, OHR Kelli Stewart and Alicia Shaffer. Hannah finished the evening with 13 kills, Michele followed closely behind with 11, Shaffer had 8, Kaleh had 5 and Kelli and OH Kristyn Bergen chipped in 2 apiece to lead the balanced attack. Magnolia took the lead in this set and never relinquished it leading by 2 up to 13-11, before forging ahead by up to 9 points at 22-13, before easing up a bit and finishing out with a 7 point edge at 25-18. Oak Ridge just had to have that "sinking feeling" again, after this match - when they realized their upset hopes were actually vaporware, and there was still another beating to take...
Take your pick at this busy intersection...classic hit and run!
Setter Hannah Davies backsetting to Hannah Fort with a
charging Jamie Kaleh keeping Oak Ridge honest!
In this final set, the DAWGS had the Lady War Eagles firmly in their jaws and methodically dismantled their opponent with a well played offensive game finishing with an 11 point advantage 25-14. It all came together behind Caitlin Holland's 16 assists, along with setter Hannah Davies' 15 and 8 digs. MB Michele Williams led the blockers with 2 solo blocks and 4 assists and 8 digs to go with her scoring this evening; MB Hannah Fort followed closely behind with 2 solo blocks and 1 assist; OH Kristyn Bergen contributed her 2 kills with 9 digs; DS Anna Barren had 6 digs; OHR Kelli Stewart had 3 assist blocks; and OH Jamie Kaleh had 1 solo and 2 assists to go with her 4 digs. OH Alicia Shaffer led all with 10 digs. Again, one realizes that the strength of this team is the: T-E-A-M, not the individual....
Again, Magnolia never trailed in this final set and had a 5 point lead early at 10-5. The Lady Bulldogs stretched it to 8 at 16-8, before relenting somewhat allowing Oak Ridge to sneak 6 more points to their total for the game, while being bludgeoned with 9 points from the stronger DAWGS. A win is a win...it's not VideoVolleyball...and it doesn't always have to be the prettiest victory. Tonight was a re-awakening (of sorts) for this team and it was good to see the fire burning. The ladies will need it as they bear down and prepare for the second part of their season...and the State Playoffs!!

DAWGS!!! BULLDOG PRIDE!!!
Lady Bulldogs JV Sweep Oak Ridge
Again the Bullpups used their power and agility to their advantage and took an quick lead in their first set behind a MB Breann Matula kill at 1-1; a couple of OHR Michelle Larson kills at 2-2 and 4-3; then a pair of OHL Katie Kreft kills - first at the right side of the court, then at the left side to put them up at 6-3. The PUPS opened it up behind a MB Meagan Little block at 8-3; OHR Chelsea Jackson kill on the right at 9-4; then a OH Jamie Paulson kill off the Lady War Eagles' feathers,...errr..hands at 10-4 and again at 16-7. Another Breann Matula kill later at 19-7; a Katie Kreft blast at 23-11; and a patented Michelle Larson "change-up" kill shot kept the lead comfortable at 12 points at 24-12 until an error advanced the PUPS to a 25-12 victory.....and the hunt was afoot!
The second set was a tighter game and was an "Error-fest" or "Errorpoluza"..... whatever! The Bullpups took an early lead at 6-3, but fell behind at 8-9 until OHR Chelsea Jackson got the ladies going with a shot at 13-12 and they never looked back. A Meagan Little kill off the hands of the defenders at 16-14; then a pair of kills from Jamie Paulson (at 17-16 and 18-16) and an Angela Yzaguirre ace at 21-20 kept the PUPS a 'whisker' ahead of the Lady War Eagles. Oak Ridge tried to hang with the DAWGS but were outscored 5-0 at the finish of this set and Breann Matula ended their evening 25-20 with a hammer shot - just as she started it and the Bulldogs JV have another feather in their caps... and this one is authentic!
