The inspired Bullpups showed no mercy and probably never thought twice about it, nor even bothered to look back - from the start of the first set, to the last point of the match. Magnolia never trailed and actually led by as many as 14 points in the match. The Lady Bulldogs played great with over 31 earned points in the 2 game sweep and were simply too much for the dazed Tigerettes.
In the first game MB Meagan Little took control with 6 kills; OH Katie Kreft and OH/MB Chelsea Jackson with 3 apiece ; MB Breann Matula with 2; and several outstanding plays by the (up and coming) setter Angela Yzaguirre who had a serving ace and repeatedly kept the confused Tigerettes on their hind paws with her jump serving and setting. Angela also, really impressed everyone with an unbelievable one handed dig that was (for all practical purposes) - out of bounds and (with the slimmest of angles) - managed to get the ball back in play, over the net, and drop in for a kill!! You could've heard a hair drop on Conroe's (stunned) side of the gym... The Magnolia fans were equally stunned and even more impressed as other players maybe wouldn't have gone to that length to score a point (or even keep a ball in play), much less - to keep her team ahead by 5 points!! Now that's the kind of attitude anyone involved in sports, can appreciate!!
Set #2 started out much of the same: OHL Michelle Larson started the Bullpups out with a kill at 1-0; Breann Matula aced her serve at 4-4 and Michelle sandwiched that point with another kill at 5-4. In addition to Breann's ace, OH Jamie Paulson had an ace midway through the game (15-11), but Lady Bulldog Brittany Wheaton also had an ace at 10-8, and her serving consistently kept Conroe second guessing themselves and out-of-sync during her time-on-the-line. The best was still yet to come, as the Bullpups began to flex the strength of their game tonight:....the FRONT LINE!
Meagan Little and Katie Kreft teamed up for a block assist at 6-4, then Katie crunched one down the left line at 8-7 and then again, later in the game - with a big kill off the Tigerettes' hands at 20-14. MB Breann Matula took control of the game at that point with a (belated) Happy Birthday kill at 12-8, a canon shot at 13-9, and another at 14-11 and watched as the rest of her team mates mauled the weaker Tigerettes until she mercifully dinked a kill over for the set/match point at 24-16 and then, finished them off 'gladiator-style' with a clean kill at the top of her "Breann Glide" for an impressive, district victory...25-16.
With everyone on the Magnolia JV team playing so well and so together, it must be so difficult for a team to find a way to beat them and then to actually execute it! That's a great way to be, ladies.....strength in numbers!
