Some more great moves by the victorious Lady Bulldogs
in their DAWGIE dance while a Lady Mustang ponders.
The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs and the Memorial Lady Mustangs were both on a parallel course as both teams went undefeated in their district play and also had a little score to settle on the side. Last year the DAWGS swept Memorial in the DAWG House and Memorial went deeper and on to the semifinals in the state tournament, while Magnolia fell short at the regional semi-finals. The year before that - it was the very same Memorial Lady Mustangs who surprised the talented 2005 DAWGS and eliminated them from the playoffs in their bi-district match. Both of these teams are experienced and from pedigreed programs that are similar in a lot of ways with this year's line up at Memorial having a great passing team to compliment their hitters and in particular, the hitting of their well known and respected Outside Hitter and All Around talent: Sidney Stewart; while the Lady Bulldogs had a very good passing team of their own with a host of weapons that were armed and ready to serve. It was a good venue and an even match on paper.
As expected, the match started out even and stayed close as both teams played well and fought hard in the first set with the DAWGS ending up on top at 27-25; then Magnolia would overcome an early 3 point defecit in the beginning of set 2 to sprint by the Lady Mustangs - running away with a 25-18 win; and now, if history was to repeat itself.....the wounded Mustangs would rise from their ashes and put a mighty comeback together to beat the DAWGS in 5!! ......WRONG!!!

Meagan Little and Hannah Fort teamed up on this
block to reject any thoughts of a Lady Mustang attack.
The Lady Bulldogs must've learned from whatever previous mistakes and weren't to be denied, as Kelli Stewart opened the DAWGS' scoring with a tip at 2-1; then a Shaffer service ace put the score at 3-1; a 'Boom Boom' shuffle pushed it to 5-2; a Jamie Kaleh 'Happy Birthday' kill at 6-2; a Meagan Little/Michele Williams' combo assist block at 7-2; then another Kaleh kill into the left corner had Magnolia leading the way at 8-2 and there was no one in maroon looking back!
Great form being shown here by Alicia Shaffer as
the ball gets passed for another Bulldog attack.
The teams traded points evenly with 12 apiece putting the score at 20-14, when the Lady Bulldogs went for the juggler and polished off the Stangs once and for all, outscoring their hosts by 5 to 1 behind a nice kill shot by Jamie Kaleh in the corner at 21-15 and an ace at 22-15; and a little help from the Lady Mustangs who mercifully ended it at 25-15. Jamie Kaleh led with 11 kills while Williams and Fort added 10 each. Fort also had eight block assists. Davies had 24 assists. (There's an audio file below...)
Just a gut feeling here, folks...but, I think the Lady Bulldogs made believers out of several people in this one! The ladies played well, were cohesive, and focused and moved quicker when transitioning from a defensive posture to an attack mode. Their reaction time and effort was extremely sharp and effecient at the right times and was impressive to witness! One can only deduce that the ladies have worked hard, listened well, and have learned a lot and are as ready as they can be to make their run.
The ladies will be starting their BI-DISTRICT PLAYOFF MATCH this Tuesday, Oct. 30 7 pm at The DAWG House vs. Spring.
A CALL TO ARMS, CALL TO ARMS!!!.... CALLING ALL DAWGS, .... CALLING ALL DAWGS:
COME PACK THE DAWG HOUSE TUESDAY AND CHEER FOR YOUR LADY BULLDOGS AS THEY BEGIN THEIR ROAD TO STATE!
LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!
