Lady Bulldogs Overpower Cy Creek Cougars

Ashlynn Newman (11) and Hannah Fort made it tough all night for the Lady Cougars.

The Lady Bulldogs took care of business tonight in the DAWG House by sweeping the Cy Creek Cougars (25-12, 25-15, and 25-16) in front of an appreciative crowd. The ladies put it all together, blending their power and passing with speed into a lethal combination that was too much for the Lady Cougars to handle.

of her passes. Alicia finished with 7 Digs for the evening.

In the first set Michele Williams single handedly took control of the match by blocking the first attack at 1-1; then slamming a thundering 'Boom Boom' kill to the floor the next play at 2-1; then quickly following it up a solo block from a Cougar backcourt kill attempt, at 3-1 before OH Jamie Kaleh joined in with a rocket of her own at 4-1. Michele put another patented blast in the Cougars' court at 5-3 that blew the DAWGS by the COOGS and on to a 20 to 9 tear... Magnolia truly played a 'complete' game with great passing, timely hitting with an extra bonus: devastating serving! Alicia Shaffer and Kelli Stewart's jump serving made life difficult for the COOGS and Kati Michael had 2 Aces midway through this set and kept Cy Creek on their back paws for the evening. There were not going to be any noticeable weaknesses in this one - just an impressive start -as the DAWGS ran away with a 25-12 victory in the friendly confines of their beloved DAWG House!

Set 2 started with Alicia Shaffer lighting things up with a kill in the middle court at 2-1, then a pair of back-to-back Aces forging Magnolia ahead at 4-1 before a host of DAWGS tore into Cy Creek like fresh meat! Michele had a kill at 5-1, Kelli Stewart jammed a shot down tyhe line at 7-2; a couple of serving points for Kati Michael at 8-3 and 9-3; pre-empting the Hannah Fort 'show' which began with a tip at 10-4, a block at 12-4 and a pair of Kills later at 17-6 and 18-7. All that was left to do, was to have Alicia Shaffer kill one at 22-7 and for Coach J to open up the bench and get some young talent on the court. Alicia had another tip at 23-13, then an Ace at 24-13 and the DAWGS would basically coast into a 25-15 bantering victory, barking as they cleared the floor, preparing for the next set.

It looked like the DAWGS were coming out firing, as there was not going to be any letting up in this third set as well. But, Cy Creek had different plans this time around. Kelli Stewart tied it up with a Kill at 1-1 and followed up with a Block at 2-1, but the dogs took an unexpected short nap and for the only time in the evening - the DAWGS awoke trailing Cy Creek until they quickly regained their form and caught the Coogs at 7-7. From there the DAWGS settled down and played defensive volleyball and forced the Lady Cougars into committing errors while making relatively few errors themselves while scoring 2 points to evry one they gave up, going forward. Meagan Little had a tipped ball at 11-9; Brittany Wheaton had a couple of service points at 13-11 and 14-11; Alicia Shaffer had a kill at 18-12 and a couple of Aces late at 22-13 and 23-13; and again with fresh faces and fresh legs - Magnolia cruised to a finish where the Lady Coogs fell on their own sword by serving out-of-bounds at 25-16. It was really an impressive evening for Magnolia against a very good Cy Creek team.
