Lady Bulldogs Varsity Sweeps College Park

Lady Bulldogs Mandi Gray and Hanah Davies "coverin' the Hits" against College Park.

The Lady Bulldogs continued marching on to their 7th match victory in a row and (more importantly) undefeated record in District 15-5A play tonight in the DAWG House by sweeping the College Park Lady Cavaliers out of the gym: 25-8, 25-11, 25-17. The streak began against Klein Oak on September 5th and Magnolia has been gathering steam ever since to represent the district as champions in the playoffs. The Dawgs were too much for their visitors tonight and made short work of their meeting by immediately ripping into them in the first set, with a 7-1 lead behind a series of kills by Michele Williams, Kelli Stewart and Kristyn Bergen. Once Alicia Shaffer chimed in with a couple of kills and a block assist - the Dawgs went way out front at 18-4, and the Lady Cavaliers could only feel engulfed in the exhaust of a jet engine without knowing where it came from. Another round of Williams, Stewart and Bergen later, and Magnolia finished it up with a 17 point edge at 25-8. Another quick start for the DAWGS!........

In Set #2, the Lady Bulldogs kept pouring it on after trailing briefly in the beginning of the game. The Dawgs continued their dominance at the net by hitting almost everything that was going forward and in the Lady Cavaliers' direction, and blocking everything that was coming back! The hitting in the match, was spread around nicely with the 26 assists Caitlin Holland dished out and the 9 more from Hanah Davies to an array of hitters: Michele Williams with 12 kills, Alicia Shaffer with 10, Kristyn Bergen had 6, Kelli Stewart with 5, and a couple of others from Jamie Kaleh and Hannah Fort. Once Magnolia went ahead at 7-5 in the second set, they continually built the lead to 3 points at 10-7; to 4 points at 11-7, to 5 points at 13-8; to 7 points at 16-9; to 8 points at 17-9, to 10, 11, 12, 13 at 24-11; and culminating at 14 points at the buzzer 25-11. It was difficult for College Park to be able to defend themselves effectively with a pack of Bulldogs nipping at them from every direction.

Lady Bulldog junior OH Alicia Shaffer had a busy
night with 10 kills, 10 digs, 1 ace, 2 block assists.

In the final set, Magnolia did more of the same at the front line of the net by controlling the court for the rest of the evening, and if anything slipped through - Alicia Shaffer (10 digs) and Mandi Gray (9 digs) were there to turn it around. The blocking for the match was exceptional with Michele Williams leading the way with 3 block assists and 2 solo blocks; Hannah Fort close behind with 3 assist blocks and 1 solo; and Kelli Stewart with 2 assist blocks and 2 solos; and a busy Alicia Shaffer with 2 assist blocks followed by Kristyn Bergen and Jamie Kaleh's assists - pretty much gave one the notion to NOT to try to hit the ball over the net against these ladies! Magnolia never trailed in the final set and took off at the gate leading by 5 points most of the game, stretching it to 6, then 7 points and finally to 8, when Kristyn Bergen mercifully ended the match by slamming a shot off the Lady Cavaliers' hands for the win at 25-17............and, Have a Nice Day!
